EARNINGS OF THE WHITNEY HORSES VEXATIOUS THE CHIEF WINNER, BUT BULK OF THE TOTAL IS WON BY THE SPEEDY BAND OF TWO - YEAR - OLDS The Whitney stable of 1919 was remarkable in that of its thirty-one horses raced only one. Dominant, was more than three years old, the other thirty being seven three-year-olds and twenty-three two-year-olds. It was a stable of good luck and bad luck combined. Its chief bits of good luck came when the three-year-old filly. Vexatious, was awarded the rich Lawrence Realization Stakes after finishing second to the disqualified Over There, and when its two-year-old Upset lhikily defeated the wonderful colt, Man o War, in. the Snnford Memorial Stakes at Saratoga. These two races gave the stable 4,9G5 in unexpected money. Its chief stroke of bad luck developed in the obstinate refusal of its three-year-old colt, Vindex, tt race. This colt was expected to be one of the stars of the year on the basis of his natural endowment of great speed, but exert that speed in racing lie would .not and did not. Blue Laddie was another disappointment. Much was expected from him, but nothing was returned. However, some excellent racing was done by the two-year-olds, notably by Panoply, Upset, John P. Grier, Cobwebs, Dr. Clark, Wildair and Afternoon. Under the circumstances it seems that the Whitney stable of 1920 should be formidable in its three-year-old division. Rumor, which may prove reliable in this instance, had it that the big colt. Leviathan, was the real star of the Whitney two-year-olds. His one race was a victory for him and curiosity will attend his debut in 1920. He is heavily engaged in big stakes next year, including the Latonia Championship Stakes.
