SHOOTING AN ACCIDENT, SAYS BROWN Albert Piedra, the Wounded Man. Reportsd Improved and Ezpcctcd to Recover. IIAVAXA, Cuba. December 17. H. 1. Drown, manager of the Cuba -American Jockey and Auto Club, declared early today that the shooting of Albert Piedra, son-in-law of Juan Montalvo. secretary of the interior, who was wounded yesterday afternoon in Rrowns offices at Oriental Park had occurred accidentally. Drown made this statement to a local newspaper man after having leeii returned to his cell in the police station at Marianao, after his appearance before a judge in the Marianao police court. He declined to make a statement to the court on the ground of unfamiliarily with Cuban laws and not having obtained a lawyer to defend him. Piedra was reported much improved today and is now expected to recover. The shooting yesterday occurred during the running of the fifth race and created considerable excitement, It is said that Drown ami Piedra had a dispute in the grandstand and afterward they entered Drowns office. A few moments later the report of a pistol was heard and Piedra staggered from the room, declaring that Drown had shot him. Drown at the time refused to make a statement.
