ORMONDAS EXCELLENT PEDIGREE GREAT HORSES FREQUENT IN THE ANCESTRY OF A FILLY WHICH WAS ONE OF THE SENSATIONS OF OUR AUTUMN RACING By EXILE Ormonda, a chestnut, is by Superman Princess Ormonde, by Purchases sire, the Futurity winner, Ormondale, and a filly which wound up her three-year-old career in most creditable fciyle, conceding seven pounds actual weight to the consistent Slippery Elm for the Bowie Thanksgiving Handicap. When racing at Saratoga speed rather than endurance seemed to be Ormondas forte. Rather a big, undeveloped filly then, she appears to have ripened slowly, and at the finish must have been near to the best three-year-cld filly, of the., vear in keirigable to concede weight to such a tough customer as her senior by a year. Slippery Elnn Superman has been a trifle slow in getting into his stride as a sire, but now that he has at last come to himself I am anticipatingTncreasing success for him, not only because he 15 as v.ell bred as any son of Commando, but also on account of the "free life" condition of the Blue Ridge yearlings last summer at Saratoga. Superman is, of course, by Commando, and his dam, Anomaly, a daughter of Bend Or, tnd his granddam, Blue Rose, half-sister by Coeruleus to Orme, sire of Flying Fox and Orby and son of Angelica, sister to St. Simon, by Galopin. Princess Ormonde is by the Futurity inner Ormondale, which is this year so well represented on tha turf by Purchase. You know the old rule, "Return the best blood in the dam to the best blood in the dam of the sire." Here it is, Bend Or to Bend Or, and Ophirdale, by Ben Holladay, to give the Hanover touch. Of course I am a crank, an enthusiast; but it does seem terrible that this Hanover line should be permitted to pass out. Not, however, if I have my way, constant dropping, you know, and I promise to use every effort in Hanovers salvation. Berriedale, ancestress of Ormonda, is a really good producing daughter of the Derby winner Donovan, and another dash of Bend Or is brought in by way of Caithness, half-sister to the Derby winner Ayrshire, and this the good old Beeswing family. dh, no, breeding counts for nothing! Any mare, I am frequently told, is apt to foal a good horse. To all of this I cannot give assent. A good two-year-old surely, but not -one capable of transmitting its own excellence to succeeding generations either way, and one rarely able after the first season, when the weight is up and the distance far, to hold its own in high class company.
