• I j j FOUR BIG TENS IN 1919 RACING J. K. L. ROSS THE LEADING OWNER, SIR BARTON CHIEF MONEY-WINNING HORSE, CLIFFORD ROBINSON LEADER OF THE JOCKEYS, WITH K. SPENCE AND H G. BED WELL HEADING THE TRAINERS With lie total of money to be raced for in 1919 so greatly exceeding the similar total of 1918 it was but natural that the leading winning owners and horses should gather returns Without precedent in recent years. As the leading owner of the year Commander J. K. L. Ross can well be proud of an aggregate of stable earnings not even closely approached since 1908. when the wonderful James R. Kcene stable won 82,340. More significant still of the abounding prosperity of American racing in 1919 is the fact that in finishing second the stable of Sam Ilildreth won the great sum of 59,075, which itself has not been exceeded by the leading winner in any other year than 1919 since 1909, in which the same owners horses gave • im the leadership and S159.112. It is noticeable that eight of the ten leading owners of 1919 showed gains in stable earnings over the previous year, the exceptions being the stables of W. K. Cm and R. T. Wilson, the falling off in their cases being but slight. The ten leaders, their totals and the comparison with 1918, are: Won in Leading Winner Won in Leading Winner 1918 Owner in 1918 1st. 2nd. 3rd. 1919 in 1919 S99.179 J. K. L. Two splendid young horses which adorned the racing of 1919 each won more money than has fallen to any leading money winning horse since the magnificent Colin amassed 31,007 in 1907. The leader was the three-year-old Sir Barton with 8,250, and second was the grand two-year-old Man o War with 3,325. It is worth noting that since Colins year the winner of the greatest sum prior to 1919 was Sir Bartons half brother, Sir Martin, which as a two-year-old in 1908 won 8,590. Mad Hatter, with his total of 4,991, is third to Sir Barton and Man o War, his total also gieatly exceeding that to the credit of a number of the leaders of the last eight years. Worth being the leader in 1911 with 6,645, Star Charter in 1312 with 4,655. Old Rosebud in 1913 with 9,057. Roamer in 1914 with 9,105, Borrow in 1915 with 0,195 and Campfire in 1916 with 9,735. As a matter of fact, every one of the big ten in this list won more than most of the leaders of the lean racing years cited. Purchase, a remarkable racer and well qualified to carry on the line of Ormonde in this counts y, was fourth, chiefly because he was not ready to race when the richest stakes of the year for three year-olds were decided. One two-year-old, six three-year olds, two four-year olds and one five-year-old compose the ten list of chief winning horses, and here it is: Col. and Horse. Sex. Age. Pedigree. Owner. Ilildreth an enviable second.
