NOTED SUCCESSES AND FAILURES SUCH BRILLIANT RACE MARES AS SCEPTRE, IMP. FIRENZE AND MISS WOODFORD FAIL TO REPRODUCE THEIR KIND, WHILE MANY OBSCURE MARES FOAL GRAND RACERS By EXILE] Sceptre, bay, 1899. by Persimmon — Ornament, by Bend Or. Though inadvertently omitted from my previous list of winning and producing mares, Sceptre has a race record unsurpassed Ity that of any other filly. Sceptre won the One and Two Thousand Guineas. Oaks and St. ] eger, and before starting on her three-year-old winning career ran second M early in the season as Tuesday. March 18, to St. Maclou for the Lincolnshire Handicap, only beaten a head, ind unlucky to lose. Sceptres record is equaled only perhaps by that of Virago, which won !.e City and Suburban and Great Metropolitan on the same afternoon, won Ihe Great Northern fiid Hying Dutchman Handicaps on successive days, went on to win the One Thousand, the Goodwood Cup, Yorkshire Oaks and Doncaster Cup, beating Kingston, in her three-year-old form. Sceptres make and shape did not suggest brood mare success, and she bred but Maid of Corinth and Maid of the Mist, which boasted any pretensions to good class; the latter, however, bred the Oaks winner Sunny Jane, and Ilamoaze, dam of that honest colt Buchan. Imp, black, 1894, by Wagner Fondling, by Tonso. As judged on her race course perform-rr.ces, including her Suburban win, Imp must be reckoned one of the best, but as a brood mare fhe was practically a failure as the dam of only Faust, Call Boy and Deviltree, dam of King John. Chelandry, bay, 1894, by Goldfinch — Illuminata, by Rosicrucian, winner of the One Thousand Guineas and second for the Oaks and St. I.eger. But for unsoundness Roquebrune would have raced even better than she did, but as a two-year-old won the Now Stakes at Ascot, her only run of the season, and won the Zetland Stakes as a three-year-old. Roquebrune is the dam of Rock Sand, Roquelaure and Roquet te, dam of the French Derby winner Dagor, and of the American winner Jusqu au Bout.
