, THOROUGHBREDS WHICH DIED IN 1919 No conspicuously great horse in present day racing died in 1919. Two fillies, the Ashland Oaks winner f Islet Beanie and the English -bred Ophelia, probably were best. Ophelia raced in such great form in the fall as to win six of her last seven races and was second in the other, giving promise of ripening into a high-class race mare in 1920. But some great ones of former days were removed. The sensational American Derby winner of 1884, Rey el Santa Anita, being the most noted in racing. The fine race horse and fairly successful sire, Garry llirmann. and the best racer ever bred in Canada, Inferno, were two more of great fame in their racing days. Greatest of all in the stud was the virile Hamburg Place stallion Star Shoot, sire of the grand three-year-old Sir Barton in his elderly davs. anil five tines premier sire of North America. His career in this country was confined solely to the- stud, where h s success wis so eminently one of a character akin to that through which Glen-coo. Leamington and Bonnie Scotland so powerfully affected American breeding in their times, that his name must live long in our bloodstock lineage of the future. Already have his sons. Cnele and Eyebrow, given evidence of their ability to carry on his male line, and others of his sous will do so. Famous brood mares gone are Fairy Geld, dam of Fair Play and Friar Rock, and Rubia Grande, dam of On Watch. Useful, but not great rice horses in the years mortuary list are Brother Jonathan. Howdy Howdy. Judge Wingfield. Eight. Boston, Straight Forward. Tombote, Tote and Words o Wisdom.
