Todays racing developed many surprises, chief o which was the victory of Lucy Kate in the two-year-old race and tlie triumph of Clintonville over Marjorie Ilynes iu the three-quarters handicap feature. Tlie finish between tliu latter pair was a hair-raising one, witli tjielcfory il1 loubt until the last stride. The backers of Marjorie Hynes disregarded her poor race In her last start when ridden by Garner, for they supported her confidently and they experienced elation when she raced into the lead promptly followed by Clintonville, one supposedly that she could shake off at her leisure, with Cot-tou Blossom, the supposed most feared contender, .in last place. The leading pair continued far in van until in the last sixteenth, where Marjorie Hynes was expected to draw away decisively, but Clintonville was not to be denied and, much to Marjorie .Hynes supporters alarm, Kennedy was forced to go to the whip on her; but to no avail, for Clintonville, running the best race of her career,- retained tlie lead she secured seventy yards, from the finish and won by a. nose. Lady Fair Play landed in third place, with Cotton Blossom in last "place. f "Mlllersburg, a stablemate to Clintonville, was the, pronounced favorite in the race Avon by Lucy Ktite and- .her race was decidedly disappointing, for she failed to finish among the placed ones. She aoteand bndly at the barrier nnd was much" used in the sir minutes delay at the post. She was off yyeY and raced prominently until in the last eighth, Ayliere she dropped back, Loveliness following the dinner in second place, with Peppery Polly landing third. Last Coin, which in a preceding race figured in the rear division, won handily from some fairly good platers in the initial dash, Legotal taking second place and War Idol, grouped in the field, third. Bruce Dudley furnished the upset in the maiden racfe, which lie won somewhat easily from Courtview liUHl Merrimac. Tribune was the favorite one here, but his bad send-off brought ubout his failure. , Golden Dawn, winner in her last race, was given tlie call in the third race, but she proved a dismal fuikire and brought up last in the field of four starters, Airdrie winning easily from Grand Slam, with Alex Jr. in third place. High Gear had to be ridden out to the last ounce to Veat the suddenly improved Buck Xail home, ,whloli was grouped with the others in the field. "Tlie close of the eastern racing will find many Arrivals from that section, including, some prominent horses. Trainer Tom Welsh will be among the early comers with eight horses owned by J. B. The Schwartz Bros." horses are also intended for late Kentucky racing and will probably be here, for the last week rind, also take in the Churchill Downs meeting. Helmet, one of the most depended ones to win the Suit-mile endurance test, which starts . next week, lias gone slightly lame and doubt is expressed it- lie will be over it in time to take part in the race.
