1 ! j FAVORITES FAIL AT LAUREL Public Finds It Difficult Task Picking the Win- ners Crack Jumper The Brook Dead. LAUREL. Mil., October 8. Walter J. Salmons, three-year-old filly Betty J. was returned the win-i ner of the mile race for fillies and mares three years old and over that served as the main race of an ordinary card at Laurel today. J. W. Beans Rubidium finished second and Toiijours third. The Salmon filly was lightly regarded in the betting because her late efforts have been restricted to races over shorter distances. She was outrun by Laughter, Siren Maid and Toujours the first half mile, but moved up .on the turn, saved ground as the field swuir: for home, and gamely withstood the belated rusli of Rubidium. Another public choice suffered defeat iu the fourth, when F. Flannery.s Thimble was beaten by Miss Knnkin and Hancocas. Miss Rankin, the extreme outsider in a field of four, beat Rnntocas a length and a half, while the latter was two lengths in front of tlie favorite. A. Johnson rode Miss Rankin and followed this victory immediately with an other on Mumbo Jumbo, which headed a band of platers going a mile and a sixteenth. American Eagle and Mountain Rose II. divided the remainder of the purse, while Paddy Dear, the favorite, was fourth. Sinn Feiner, a starter in this race carrying the colors of W. L. Oliver, straddled the fence on the way to the post and was cut up a bit in extricating himself: Jockey Stirling, who has been riding in improved form the last few days, started the afternoon by riding the winner of the opening dash, a five and a half furlongs affair for two-year-olds, which brought together the largest field of tlie fall season in Maryland. After the start Stirling, astride W. T. Grives, had it all his own way, leading from flag to flag and winning by three lengths from Parader and TraiituJa. Steeplechase rider H.
