FRED TARAL RETURNS FROM GERMANY Fred Taral, back more than a decade ago one of the popular riders on American race courses, arrived in New York last Saturday on the Belgian steamer Zealand. Taral has not ridden since 1911. His last, mount was in the Grand Prix. For the last eight years Taral has been training horses in Germany. His last berth was with the Weinberg Bros. Taral, in speaking of racing conditions in Germany, said: "Racing was good in Germany, even during the big war. There was not a year I did not send many winners to the post. The only trouble now is that the German mnrks dont call for much. But the crowds which attend the popular Grunewald course liear Berlin are of large proportions. Last Sunday, two weeks ago, at Grunewald there were 100,00d persons present and the handle was ,000,-000 marks through the pari-mutuel machines; t "I have come back home to stay," said Taral. "It certainly looks good to me here. The misery among the poorer classes in Germany is deplorable, they actually have not enough to eat. There is jilenty of money, but it buys but little. I -will endeavor to get some horses for racing next year, but as yet I have made no connections with any stable."
