LATONIAS OFF DAY RACING . . Card for Platers, but Furnishes Some Interesting Contests. i King Gorin Shows a Flash of His Old Time Form Lothair Gives His Owner a Race. i BY J. I,. DEMPSEY. LATONIA. Ky., October 15. Interesting sport developed this afternoon although the curd a;? a yliole Had an off day character. A purse at three-quarters with ,800 added was the outstanding rnee and it developed a mild surprise in the victory of King Gorin, which displayed a performance1 viortliy of his best days and won after having come from a long way back in the last quarter. Minute Man, an extreme outsider, was the runner-up after having shown "a good performn nee. first in racing the fleet Out the Way into defeat and then at the end in outstaying Blue Paradise. Contrary to her former custom, Blue Paradise, which ruled favorite, lacked early speed, but finished fast and resolutely after beginning the last quarter. The silks of T. P. Hayes were carried to victory for" the first time in many months on a Kentucky track, when his Lothair came home in advance of an ordinary band that started in the third race. Lothair was much the best and won with ease; Jackstrow just managed to outstay Bombast. Prank Kelley continued his success and his Gangway was the one to place a purse to his credit when he landed in advance of Botheration. The latter was backed almost to the exclusion of the others in the race, but- Gangway led him by a good, margin; or.the- entire, race. -i-- ,v . fiflerbealiuspiclously- for backers of favorYtes ,V7, When he, won the opening dash from Lady Luxury. The latter was lightly regarded, but raced in her Usual consistent style and was the contributing factor, in Last Coins failure, for she forced him to maintain a, stiff .pace from the start and caused him to tire near the end. The Respess connections made amends for Last Coins failure when Dimples won the fifth race from eleven other two-year-olds. She-had to be ridden to the limit to enable her to wear Cozette down, with Acclaim just managing to outstay the poorly ridden and frequently interfered with Tawa-sentha. . There was an influx of owners with their horses from Kenilworth Park, where racing fpr this year oh Dominion courses terminated Wednesday. Those who reached here from Canada with their horses included H. Neusteter, W. M. Cain, W. Mikel, JV M. Cooper and D. McDermld. Joekpys F. Murphy and A, Pickens were additions to the jockey colony. Both came from Canada. , Jockey Kennedy had to cancel all his riding engagements for the afternoon on account of being taken suddenly ill in the jockeys room before the first race. Jefferson Livingston, who is here on a business trip, was a visitor at the track this afternoon and will visit the Highlands Stock Farm, where he has the stallions Royal II. and Col. Vennic, as well as a .number of brood mares. He announced that the report that he would retire "from racing was erroneous and that he would continue to race and breed horses. Word was received "today by starter A. B. Dade of the death of Joseph A. iMurphys father in St. Louis last Wednesday. The horses, of Thomas C. McDowell are Intended "for retirement, and the owner, who is now hero, is planning to ship them to his Ashland Farm, near Lexington, tomorrow night.
