CHEAPER GRADE OF HORSES Furnish the Entertainment at Laurel Friday Principal Race to Sugarmint. LAUREL, MD., October 15. The cheaper grade of horses . provided the entertainment this afternoon at Laurel Park with the Manokin Purse, a mile race for three-year-olds, under allowance conditions,, as the centraVfiguro of the program. Sugar-mint, with Morris astride, running in the colors of JSam Louis, won in a canter.- The winner was restrained in a contending position until straightened away for the run home, after which Morris broiiglit her around the leaders, and won by five lengths. Alliyan finished second and Johnny Overton third. Parader, wearing the color of S. A.- Clopton, won the opening dash at three-quarters, for two-year-olds. Loughland and .Lough Red were second and third respectively. The winner came, from behind to get up in the closing strides under Coltl-lettls good riding. Another favorite scored lu the second race when Man o th Hour, excellently ridden byH. Crawford, won going away from the, largest band of jumpers brought together this season in Maryland. A close finish marked the third race. Clyde Freemans weak-hearted Murphy "made the early pace fast and came up. to the stands with a good lead, but was tiring fast when The Belgian II. rushed up on the inside and passed lilm in the closing stride. The Belgian II.s number was hung up, much to the dissatisfaction of the contingent which had backed Murphy into second choice. The talent suffered another blow in the fourth, which brought together a shifty band. The public choice was Chief, with Tantalus a close second. Jockey Rouiarielli. astride Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Bly, upset the calculations and, coming from behind, won by a neck from Tantalus and paid f 10.20 for tickets. Fizer was third. The combination of- the S. A. Clopton and jockey Coltilettl made It a doable in the sixth race, when the latter piloted Twcpair to an oasy victory over Superwonian and The Baggage. Kilmer horses, arrived today from New York. Mr. McDaniel says he knows nothing about the proposal for a race between Exterminator anil Man o War In Kentucky. The McOee gelding is at, Plmlico training for his stake engagements at that point next month. He is in excellent condition. , Henry McDaniel is breaking a band of yearlings at Belmont Park. They are the property of R. L. Gerrj1-. P. J. Connelly has turned over. Phantom Fair and Artful Dodger to W. A. Burttschell to train. .Sir Barton and several of the J. K. L. Ross horses which raced in Canada "arrivad here this morning. E. F. Whitneys Glen Light broke down so badly in the last race Thursday that he was- destroyed. J. Splain shipped Saga here to be fired and freshened for a campaign in Cuba. Francis Dunn, mutucl inspector for the Province of Quebec, took in the racing today. P. F. Finnegans string of seven arrived this morning from Richmond, Va.
