MAD HATTERS GRAND RACE 1 1 Defeats Boniface in Grueling Finish in the Bowie Handicap. ; 1-5 -1 1 His Seventh Straight Success Achieved After a Wonderful and Game Performance. 1 I BALTIMORE, Md., November 8. Some great horses have won the Bowie Handicap, but none ever ; showed a better performance than did Mad Hatter when lie beat Boniface by a nose in a grueling finish in this-famous old Murj-land race at Pimlico this afternoon. Mad Hatter carried 120 pounds, made all the pace and, displaying great speed and rare, courage, managed to outstay J. IC. L. Ross gallant Boniface. The pace was fast from the start and the winner raced into defeat The Porter and Yellow Hand in the first mile, then proved too much for Paul, Jones when the Kentucky Derby winner threatened on the far turn. In the stretch run Boniface came through next to the inside rail and: was" gradually wearing down the gap which sep-: n rated him from the leader. He could not quite" make, it, however, and Mad Hatter won by the smallest of margins after a great finish. Exterminator, the top weight, had a rough race, being! cut "off whenever Pairbrother made an effort to1 get .through.. He was the principal sufferer of all the starters and with a clear course would undoubtedly have been a more prominent factor.; The mile and a half was run in 2:31 and todays victory was the seventh straight scored by Mad Hatter. Going to the last jump near the hea$ of the homestretch, Jarboe, who had the mount on Stucco, caught hold of the leader Fair Macs tail and when the pair took the last fence Jie haandjiold of Fair Macs bridle. He clung to it until the last hundred yards and, instead of going to the. left of the rail which marks the course at the finish, he elected to go to the right and took the water jump in front of the stand. Fair Mac was kept in the proper course and finished off by himself. After the race the stewards issued a ruling as . follows: "JockeJL R. Jarboe has been suspended for the remainderTif the meeting by the stewards for foul riding in the second race. His badge is to be taken .up and he is to be denied the privilege of the grounds for the remainder of the meeting. His case will be referred to the stewards of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association. . TEN-XEC TO WINTER QUARTERS. S. A. McNaughton decided to retire Ten-Lec after her race in the Walden on Saturday last and the filly was shipped back to Belmont Park this morning, Vrhere she will join the remainder of the Foreign stable racers, which have gone into winter quarters at the Long Island track. Mr. McNaughton will leave for New York tomorrow. Entries for the Pimlico Futurities, which closed today, simply poured in, and it looks as if the produce of every good mare in the country lias been nominated. A number, of entries were also received from abroad. H. G. Bedwell made ninety-eight entries for Commander Ross, fourteen of which were for next years running of the stake. W.. J.. Beyer has decided to make a steeplechaser of Duusandel and the horse will be sent to Benning to getliis early education. Verity was claimed after her victory on Saturday by S. Louis for ,207. This mare has changed hands over a dozen times since last spring. E. K. Bryson has decided to retire Bellringer and Haran until next spring and the pair will be sent to the Devers Farm, near Perryville, Md., where they will Join the steeplechaser Jack of Spades, which has been there for a couple of months. G. Bryan, who left for New Orleans a few weeks back to inspect the Jefferson Park plant, was an arrival. -He reports everything ready for the opening in New Orleans and predicts a great meeting rtliere. The conditions of the Monkton Steeplechase, to be run Thursday, November 11, have been changed as follows: ,000 handicap for four-year-olds and over, the winner to receive ,230, the second horse ,000 and sixty per cent of any penalties, the third horse 00 and forty per cent of any penalties, and the. fourth horse 50. Three claims were maide during the afternoon, which were as follows: Sobrigade was taken by the Morris stable for ,525; My Friend Pat was claimed by R. P. Shanner for ,550, and Deck- mate went to E. P. Summerfleld for ,020.
