Man o Wars New American Record of 1 :35 Fastest of Year at Distance. Races at the distance of one mile have always been unpopular with the American racing public. Time was when a mile in less than 1:40 was the exception instead of the common occurrence, it is. today. With the great advancement in the art of track building and conditioning a mile run in less thnn 1:38 at the present time no longer possesses the attraction of novelty, nor does it aroilse half the enthusiasm displayed at Louisville May 27, 1877, when Ten Broeck electrified followers of racing by running the. distance in the then unprecedented time of 1:39. Nevertheless, miles in 1:38 or better are superior displays of speed and in most catses the accomplishment of the best horses Of the year. During. 1920 there were-forty-three ntces at, one mile run in 1:38 or better. .Man 6 War has the fastest mile of the year to. his. credit The champion establishing a new American :reeord for the distance in a race when he won the Withers Stakes at Belmont Park in 1:35 after a wonderful display of his marvelous speed. The. brilliant but erratic Naturalist ran the. second fastest mile of the year at Belmont Park in winning the Manhattan Handicap in 1:30.
