GREAT LUCK OF AN ENGLISH PLUNGER There is a good story going the English racing rounds, about Thunderer. A leading English owner who is a big betting man has had some extraordinary luck this year. He usually bets with a firm named Ladbroke and Co. The story is that when Thunderer ran at Newbury he had been winning so much from the Ladbrokes that they thought there was a chance to get a bit back. Thunderer seemed to have a really prohibitive weight in that race and the Ladbrokes know that Humorist was the better horse. On the morning of the race they Itelephoned to their client and asked him if lip vould like to have a bet on Thunderer. They thought he would jump to. the temptation and he readily agreed to have 5;000 on the horse. One can judge the consternation of the bookmakers when the horse did the unexpected by winning at 7 to 1. They thought they -were getting 5,000 out of their man, who once more beat them to the tune of 5,000. He is said to be 500,000 at least ahead on the season.
