REVIEW OF NEW YORK RACING STATE, AS A FIELD,. SHOWS SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE OVER THE RETURNS OF 1919, WITH H P. WHITNEY LEADING THE WINNING OWNERS AND MAN 0 WAR THE HORSES The New York field of racing was a scene of prosperous activity from start to finish of its 1920 turf campaign. Its product of money to successful owners showed a gain over 1919 of the quite substantial sum of 81,023. Debarred of any of the opulent revenue from betting, which so tells in the prosperity of tracks receiving a rich income from the niutuel machines, this increase speaks eloquently of the genuine liberality and enterprise of the New York racing bodies, likewise of the hearty support given their praiseworthy efforts by the general racing public in the form of gate receipts. The fair presumption is that every one of the New York clubs reaped at least a small profit, and nearly all these profits, if not all, are going right back into improvements and increased offerings. The Westchester Racing Association is going about this in a broad way in making the Belmont Stakes a 0,000 race for three-year-olds. As sure as the sun shines the people of New York will annually respond to this big appeal by flocking to Belmont Park in numbers that will pay this guaranty over and over. It supplies New York racing with one tiling it long has lacked a feature so big -and so outstanding that every New-York lover of racing will find its lure irresistible. In its two meetings Belmont Park slightly exceeded Saratoga In its total distribution, but Saratoga led in daily output, giving an increase in this item over 1919 of more than ,000 per diem. In fact, every principal New York racing organization made an excellent showing in this particular, Jamaica also increasing its daily return by more than ,000, vvhich was going fast for any track. Complete details of the money returns to owners from the component tracks of the New York field are presented in the following three tables, one interesting feature attesting the correctness of New York racing being the fact that 48 per cent of the favorites won. No other section of the country makes such a showing of consistency in racing to public form: The three tabulations following give a comprehensive statistical history of the campaign of 1920 over the New York tracks: - ; gj r .2 3 . 4;-vr Track and Meeting. -v:"1 01 " Ks : on en c.n . : t : : .in Saratoga 20 157 127 280 $ 358,240 77 29 fl 30 12 .49 Belmont Park autumn meeting ..... 12 72 81 15G 183,978 45 15 12 28 C .G2 Aqueduct spring meeting 17 102 108 200 182,325 3G 30 3G 1G 15 .53 Belmont Park spring meeting 18 108 10G 218 179,340 55 2G 27 29 14 .51 Empire City summer meeting 10 9G 104 178 150,980 38 28 30 17 12 .40 Aqueduct autumn meeting 13 78 87 157 129,881 41 22 15 23 12 .53 Jamaica autumn meeting 13 78 95 1C1 128,745 30 18 24 24 17 .4G Empire City autumn meeting 13 78 9G 140 118,791 38 24 16 2G 11 .49 Jamaica summer meeting 9 54 81 129 95,100 20 13 15 9 4 .48 Jamaica spring meeting 7 42 G9 99 58,980 23 10 9 9 4 .55 United Hunt Club .. 2 11 17 29 6,045 5 1 4 4 2 .60 Totals and Grand Percentage 146 S76 ,598,405 420 216 239 221 109 .48 No betting on one race; walkover. Without possessing any good horse four years old or over, the Whitney stable was one of singularly great strehght in three-year-olds and two-year-olds. It was due to the brilliant racing of these young horses of his own breeding that he led all owners in the jJew York field by a big margin. Had not Man o War been in the way his stable would have been something wonderful. To that same all conquering three-year-old Man o War Samuel D. Riddle owes Ids second place in the owners list. Sam C. Hildreth had some bad luck in the way of good horses goiiig wrong, but, aside from that, had little to complain of and finished third witli an enviable stable account. J. K. L. Ross and R. T. Wilson came next, close together in earnings. J. W. McClelland and J. W. Salmon each won over 0,000, mainly owing to their possession of some excellent two-year-olds, Salmon having two of the best two-year-old fillies of the year in Careful and Step Lightly. To them was vouchsafed the frequent pleasure of viejvjug the best race, horses of North America in excitiug clashing. Out AVest and in Canada some of them, from time to time, made forays to contend for rich money inducements, but when their quests were. over they returned to" their home tracks and there Man o War, Exterminator, Sir Barton, Naturalist, Cirrus, On Watch, Mad Hatter, Audacious, Trystcr, Leonardo II. and other stars of the year were in quick recurring meetings. A great many horses could come West from the New York tracks, and win, but few western horses, could go East and win .against the best dnily spen out there. Man o AYars eight victories oyer New York; tracks easily gave him first place among the money winning horses. Four two-year-olds Step Lightly with her Futurity Stakes, -Leonardo II. with his Hopeful Stakes, Tryster and Prudery came next to Man o War. Then in order followed the four-year-old Cirrus, the three-year-old On Watch and the five-year-old Exterminator. Other winners of 0,-000 or more were such fleet-footed ones as Cleo.-patra, Lion dOr, Grey Lag, Thunderstorm. Ensor came to the front as the star rider of the New York field, both in respect of number of races won and percentage. He seems to liave developed into an able rider and there is "ample room for more of his kftid. In Teal ability Sande was probably his equal, but was only third in the list, C. Kummer taking second place. C. Turner staged an effective comeback and rode with skill and success until a broken collar-bone put him in retirement for a time. Mooney, L.
