BROOD MARES to Be Offered for Sale BY THE KENTUCKY SALES COMPANY November 29 to December 4, 1920 Jefferson Livingston, having decided to discontinue the breeding of thoroughbreds, has consigned fifteen choicely bred native and imported mares to the Annual Breeders Sale, to be held by the Kentucky Sales Co. during the week of November 29-December 4. The mares are as follows: BRED TO ROYAL II. Imp. Hannah Pile, bay, 1912, by Beppo Beattie, by Volodyovski. Imp. Melus, bay, 1915, by Polymelus Spangled, by Missel Thrush. Rosanne, bay, 1914, by Pillo Craigmaddie, by Minting. The ever-increasing race course success of horses which are bred up on a Castleton or Nursery foundation is daily attracting more notice, and this success is assuredly due to the intelligent and careful selection of brood mares on the part of the proprietors of these two worldfamous bloodstock nurseries. The day of the mare of obscure origin is over and done with and from this time forward only the best will suffice, hence the announcement that Mr. Jefferson Livingston has decided to dispose of his choicely bred band of brood mares, though a source of regret to all, is nevertheless of more than passing interest because breeders generally are afforded a splendid opportunity of improving their brood mare holdings. Not a few of Mr. Livingstons mares are imported bred, and as for the others they are one and all members of the best home families. Among the various lots to come up for sale are the Kentucky Oaks winner LILLIAN SHAW, a chestnut four-year-old daughter of the leading sire of the year, FAIR PLAY, and EARLY LOVE, by KING ERIC. LILLIAN SHAW, bred for the first time this season, is in foal to the Latonia Derby winner and grandson of PERSIMMON, ROYAL II. Daughters of FAIR PLAY are certain of success as brood mares, not only because of his Australian descent, but also because his dam FAIRY GOLD is a daughter of that extra good brood mare sire BEND OR, and his granddam DAME MASHAM, by GALLIARI, son of GALOPIN and MAVIS, daughter of that prince of brood mare sires MACARONI and FAIR PLAY, a member of tbe all-conquering MAID OF MASHAM family, from which come also that good brood mare sire STAR SHOOT, the Derby sire CYLLENE, ST. HILAIRE, PETER and WINKFIELDS PRIDE, all of them good brood mare sires of note. EARLY LOVE, dam of LILLIAN SHAW, is a daughter of KING ERIC, a successful brood mare sire of KING TOM descent, whose dam CYCLONE is by PARMESAN, son of SWEETMEAT from TYPHOON, sister to HURRICANE, dam of ATLANTIC, by WILD DAYRELL. All of this is first-rate brood mare blood. Moreover, EARLY LOVES dam, MAY BEE III., is a daughter of CASINO, a horse of MACARONI descent, whose dam CASTAGNETTE traces to POCAHONTAS. Besides, LILLIAN SHAW is a member of the GALOPADE-DANCE family, the family of that good two-year-old filly of 1920 CAREFUL, winner of twelve races and over 33,000 in first moneys alone. LILLIAN SHAW has this season been mated with the ST. SIMON horse ROYAL II., with the express object in view of combining the ST. SIMON and MELBOURNE strains, so apparent in the make-up of such equine stars as PERSIMMON, his brother LA FLECHE and her sister MEMOIR; GEORGE SMITH, THE WHITE KNIGHT, MALSTER, etc. Another really good mare to be sold is HANNAH PIKE, a young daughter of BEPPO, sire of GAY LAURA, GAY CRUSADERS dam, and BEATTIE, by the Derby winner and ST. SIMON horse VOLODYOVSKI. HANNAH PIKE has also been on a visit to ROYAL II., also for the purpose of combining the MELBOURNE and ST. SIMON strains. HANNAH PIKE, it may be said, traces in the female line to ELLEN MIDDLETON, dam of the Derby winner WILD DAYRELL and ancestress of PERSIMMON, DIAMOND JUBILEE, FLORIZEL II., PICTON, HECTOR, LANIUS and this years St. Leger winner, CALIGULA. ORLO, another of Mr. Livingstons offerings, is also bred to ROYAL II. for the sake of the ST. SIMON -BEND OR blend, which ere this has resulted in the production of many of the best, notably SCEPTRE and the triple crbwn winner POMERN. ORLOS sire, ORBY, won the Epsom Derby, and his daughters are highly esteemed as brood mares abroad, particularly so from the fact that his dam, IUIODA B., is a daughter of the best brood mare sire ever bred in the United States, HANOVER. ORLO also is a member of the AGNES family, the best family there is, for it is the family of BROOMSTICK, SCEPTRE, SARDANAPALE, MARTAGON, ST. GATIEN, DESMOND, etc. Others of the Livingston mares to be offered are the Ashland Oaks winner MANDY HAMILTON, a five-year-old daughter of JOHN OGAUNT, bred to ROYAL II., ST. SIMON to ISONOMY this time, and by this plan of mating came PRINCE PALATINE, BONA VISTA, one of the many celebrated horses bred by uniting the strains of COMBE and LADY CECIL, which follows introduces the great brood mare strain of FLYING DUTCHMAN. Her sire, the St. Leger winner OSSIAN, was by SALVATOR, son of DOLLAR. MANDY HAMILTON is yet another whicli has visited ROYAL II. FLORENCE WEBBER, bred to ROYAL II., is by that good brood mare sire PEEP ODAY, of AYRSHIRE and SPRINGFIELD descent, out of DELFT, by that unusually good brood mare sire HAMBURG, sire of JERSEY LIGHTNING, dam of THUNDERER and REGRET and of MAY FLORENCE, dam of the Kentucky Derby and Suburban winner PAUL JONES. So runs the pedigree to the Hying BLUE GIRL, by SIR DIXON to BONNIE BLUE, by HINDOO and so on to MAGGIE B. B., the best there is. The blood lines of PRINCESS KATHLEEN at once appeal, in that she is a daughter of SAIN, sire of the dams and many winners and out of SNEERWELL, A. J. Smalls dam, by the Hermit horse ST. BLAISE, and this the Tinted Venus branch of ST. SIMONS family No. 11. PRINCESS KATHLEEN, of course, on account of her ST. SIMON descent, has been mated with COLONEL VENNIE. Young mares coming of productiug strains, bred for the first time this season, to be offered are JEANO, ZINTHON and ALVERDA. JEANO is by the coming brood mare sire DICK WELLES, whose KING ERIC and HANOVER blood insures for him success as a brood mare sire. WINTER, dam of JEANO, is also the dam of the Kentucky Derby winner WINTERGREEN, and she is by EXILE, sire of FORGET, dam of OVERSIGHT, BORROW, etc., won of MORTEMER, which got the dams of STALWART, PREVIOUS, SIBOLD One Thousand, SOUFFLE. WARING, DELHI, etc. ZINTHON is bred to ROYAL II. and is of BEND OR descent, being by MARATHON, son of MARTAGON, and is out of ZINFANDEL, by HANOVERS son, THE COMMONER, from LAURA ETHEL, by BRAMBLE, son of BONNIE SCOTLAND, and so to the famous LADY WAYWARD, by VIRGIL, and this the LIGHTSOME branch of the LEVITY family, from which so many of the best of the winners come. ALVDRDA, by FAIR PLAY, from ORLO by ORBY, and a member of the AGNES family, and bred to ROYAL II., this is indeed hard to beat, especially as close to hand is MEDORA, dam of the Ascot Gold Cup winner, ZINFANDEL, and AGNETA, dam of ST. ANGELO, by the best brood mare sire of them all, MACARONI, and this, too, followed by a dash of FLYING DUTCHMAN through his son DOLLAR, sire of FAIR AGNES, surely at no very distant date ALVERDA is to be known for her excellence as a brood mare. If only on account of the excellence of their breeding, such mares as these I I are fit to i become ornaments to any mans stud, and their future value assured, . I I for Mr. Livingston always, in the purchase of fillies, had a future eye to their I II I usefulness as brood mares, being well aware of the fact that without breeding I I continued race course success is not to be had.
