NEW SIRES FIRST ASPIRANTS Names Givjen Macomber Yearlings by Hesperus and Which Will Race Next Year. BY F. L. McKENNEY. SAN FRANCISCO, Cal., November 23. AViiat can be accomplished, if anything, in the mingling of the ultra-fashionable thoroughbred blood of today with strains popular thirty or forty years- ago mil be demonstrated in the racing careers of eight yearlings that recently were sent over to the San Jose race track from Elmwood Stock Farm. The youngsters are the property of A. K. Macomber and are being given their primary education as race horses along witli ten yearlings that have been at the training grounds about- five months. Seven of tlie new baud of "babies" to be put" into training are colts. Six of the colts and the one filly are by Hesperus, a son of Sunstar and Our Lassie, while the other colt has as sire Palto Alto, a son of the Hanover horse Heywood. Hesperus was a handsome brown stallion that Mr. Macomber had the misfortune to lose by death when he was only six years old. On both sides of his pedigree he came of stock much in demand nowadays. Sunstar, his sire, seems to "improve with age," as season nfter season lie sends stake winners to the races such as Buclian, Galloper Light and others. Our Lassief dam of Hesperus, was by Ayrshire, dam Yours, by Melton, and was a grand race mare, as was .shown by her victory in the Oaks of 1903. She wr.s a beautiful filly, being far better looking than Pretty Polly and other famous members of her sex; clean limbed, with a round barrel, muscular forearm and not too broad quarters. Hesperus was a brother to the high-class Hollister. The mares to which Hesperus was bred are of the Brutus line for the most part, blood noted in its day, hut not heard of much nowadays. Brutus was by the Macaroni horse Macgregor, dam Teardrop, by Scottish Chief. Teardrop was one of a number of well-bred brood mares that were imported by the late Senator Lcland Stanford. Brutus was a good race horse and probably the most successful stallion in . Californias breeding history. A well-formed brown colt by Hesperus, dam Mor-tonia, will bring back a host of memories to old timers when he goes out under colors. This fellow-is related to The Roman, considered by many horsemen ! to have been the best son of Brutus. Mortonla is by Mortlake, dam Sidouia, the most highly tried j mare Charles T. Boots, owner of Brutus, ever raised, according to veterans hereabouts. Sidonia was a daughter of the Macgregor horse. A good looking chestnut colt, by Hesperus, is a son of Narcotic, a daughter of the famous Lucrezia Borgia, which made the four-mile record of 7:11 against time twenty-three years ago at Oakland. Other colts are from daughters of Borgia and Borghesi, well remembered sons of Brutus. The yearlings have been given pleasing names in accordance with Hie policy of Mr. Macomber. Their breeding and names follow: Topmost, br. c. by Hesperus Instigution, by Mortlake the family.! ..Salvation.
