" YOUNG ENGLISH LEADERS Pedigrees of Leighton, Monarch and Pharmacie Officially Classed as Best. BY EXILE. The breeding of the official two-year-old top weights Monarch, Leighton and Pharmacie is of more than usual interest in that It gives further Iirpof, if proof be needed,- that race horses are not bred to figures, but rather to a blending of the strains of Herod Slatchem Eclipse. No further proof of tills is needed here, on account of the prowess of such as Man o War, Sir Barton, Exterminator, Tryster. Leonardo II., etc. By the way, though in no wise trying to make Pif Jr. a good horse, he is bred Eclipse Matchem, by Waterboy, whose dam was the Herod mare Zealandia, by Sir Modred Anna Bain,, by Kingston. Pif Jr. was the only one so bred in the field which went to the pots for the Latonia and Louisville Cup Handicaps. According to this, this autumns English official estimate of two-year-olds of 1920, Monarch and Leighton are equal and the filly Pharmacie not far behind them in quality. Monarch is a chestnut son of the St. Leger winner and Eclipse horse Tracery, from Teofani, by the Eclipse horse Black Duck, whose dam Call Duck was a daughter of the Herod horse Macaroni and Monarchs granddam Cigarette, by the Matchem sire Marco. In the female line Monarch runs back to rare old Penelope, though by the rather unusual route of Dame Heron, Rent Day, Prudence, etc. , , , 1 fSpringfield fRockSand.. f Sainfoin lSanda and li Ist- Simon fSJ LR1uebrune" lltoquebruue I BIto j fOrme fcXf WelKonia 2 J tPlaisauterie. Qneen of the Earths dam Lonely, dam of Planudcs and granddam of Malster, is a member of the outside Bruce Lowe family No. 21, and in the body of the pedigree there are to be found fine returns of Galopin, Angelica to Galliard, of Bend Or and of Macaroni, the Lily Agnes of Ormonde to the Mavis of Galliard. 1 f Lc SamaritaiJ fLeSancy.... Pharmacie is a member of another outside family, successful sire of the Oaks winner Clrarlebelle, No. 25, and by Charles OMalley Eclipse, the and the Grand Prix winner Comrade. Prescription, dam of Pharmacie, is a daughter of the Herod horse Djnneford, which won the rich Princess of Wales Stakes some years ago and is by Dinna Forget Gracie, by the Matchem sire Arbitrator. Dinna Forget, by Loved. One, sire of Doris, dam of Sunstar and Princess Dorrie. M. S., grnnddamjjafjPharmftcie, is just another daughter of the .Matchem sire Marco.. Certainly the numbering of the families by Bruce Lowe is instructive and from certain branches of the different families do the best of the winners come, but race horses cannot be bred to figure time, with anything like the same precision they can by . blending the blood of Herod, Matchem and Eclipse. ?
