LINCOLN COURSE AND ITS TRADITIONS The Lincoln English course upon which the Lincolnshire Handicap is run is not one of the pleasantest in England Though its racing is usually good tin racing public isnt in love witli it It lias its traditions It is not generally known that an English monarch once acted as clerk of the course courseThe The first of the Stuart kings James I of odious memory was present at Lincoln on Thursday April in the year of grace HH7 and from an ancient record appears ti have appointed himself to that position positionOn On the day mentioned a great horse race for a cuppe took place on Lincoln Heath whereupon the city with commendable lilterality erected a scaffold on which the king stood scaffolds were popular in those days daysQuite Quite satisfied with the arrangements made on liis behalf the king went further and ordereil the lust quarter mile of the course to be rated and corded with rope and hoops on both sides whereby the people were kept out and the horses that runned were seen faire
