BELMONT PARK SHAPING UP Changed Racing Plant Will Please the New York Public Saturdays Fog Impedes Training Old Course to Be Used for forEarly Early Jumping Races NKAV YORK X V March 2S Helmont Park was wrapped in a cold thick fog Saturday morning which Impeded horse work though there were a good many visitors to the course What work was done was on the main track The place is still in u mess A lot of finishing work remains to IK done and a world of debris is to be removed before the plant gets to normal AVheii Helmont Park is ready for the public it will be a revelation to Xew Yorkers who go a racing The new stand will be painted green Preparations for giving it a coat of this color are all ready AVhen completed the cost of the work will amount to threeipiarters of a million dollars and what is virtually a new racing plant will bo opened openedThe The club members ln xes were being installed Sat ¬ urday in the eastern end of the grandstand grandstandTen Ten jumpers of the Greentroe Stable are at Helmonl They came a few days ago from thn farm at Red Hank N J Irish Sea AAida and Touch Me Not Fairbrother were smartly galloped together Irish Sea shows more speed than at any time last year All the horses look well wellThere There is still plenty of coughing among the horses in the stables Those of the Greentree Stable are not affected affectedIt It is certain that the new Helmont steeplechase course will not be u ed for the first meeting Mr J E AAidener with bis i minor J Howard Lewis keenly expert in the jumping side of racing were over the ground thoroughly a few days ago The new fills will not be suitable for taking off or landing until the ground has thoroughly settled Messrs AVidcner and Lewis and superintendent Pels examined the ground and plan from all angles The jumping races will of course be run right handed the opposite of the way of past running on the old course The old jumping course will be used for the first meeting Later on when it is entirely safe and suitable the new coursi will he put in operation A new jump will probably go on tin lower turn There was a jump on this turn in tlu past but owing to many falls at il the obstacle was abandoned Mr LowN explained to superintendent Pels that the falls which caused the jump to he abandoned were natural in conse Uticnce of the lefthand way of running because horses going at it with the left foot first as they always do were puzzled at the unatural effort and thus fell fellAVork AVork on the Helmont training track is going briskly on It will take another week to finish Then all training on the main track will be stopped and it surface smoothed and carefully gone over day by day until racing time comes May 27 27The The Knapp and Coe horses leave Havana next Tuesday for New York YorkJames James Evans manager and trainer for Major Glfford A Cochran has gone to AAhite Sulphur Springs AV Aa for treatment He has been out of health for several months
