TIPPITY WITCHET WINNER Popular Racer Easily Victor in Bowies Opening Day Feature Jadda and Columbine Other Fa ¬ vorites to Score Big Crowd in Attendance BOWIE Md April 2 Spring racing in Mary ¬ land began today at Prince George Park under clear skies with warm weather prevailing and before a crowd that filled every available place on the grounds of the muchimproved course of the Southern Maryland Agricultural and Breeders Asso ¬ ciation Large delegations from Philadelphia Washington and even New York mingled with the big outiMjiiring of the followers of racing from Baltimore and other Maryland cities In every respect beginningThe it was an auspicious beginning The ever popular Tippity Witchet carrying the colors of L T Bauer for whom lie raced so well at New Orleans during the winter won the Inaugural Handicap the chief offering of the good opening day program The race was interesting throughout St Isidore practically sharing favorit ¬ ism with Tippity Witchet and Mythology for which there was also strong support alternated in paceniaking during the early running but both tired after going threequarters After they re ¬ tired Tippity Witchet which Had been saved just behind the leaders assumed the lead and the race was over Captain Hershler was second tired from his early efforts in racing St Isidore into defeat but gamely hanging on when Bolster threatened to pass him in the last few strides stridesAfter After a good winters rest Jadda the Marathpn gelding from the stable of J W Bean came back to the races today the same fast sprinter lie was on his retirement last fall With James Butwell in the saddle and despite the fact that he was con ¬ ceding much weight to all his opponents Jadda found little trouble accounting for the Fidelity purse the secondary attraction of the afternoon He displayed the most speed and had the others soundly beaten after going a half mile Butwell casing him up at the end Jaddsl was an oddson choice popularTlie and his victory was immensely popular Tlie honor of riding the first winner of the meet ¬ ing fell to Jockey L Ensor who brought Bed Tom home an easy victor in the inaugural dash Bed Tom was the only one of the eight twoyearolds in the race that had ever started before and his brief racing education at New Orleans gave him an advantage of which he made good use He quickly raced into a big lead and running true and straight was never in danger Opperman from P T Chinus stable was second and Radical third while Alex II the favorite on the strength of several fast workouts finished fourth Butwell riding him hard all the way but to no avail availFourteen Fourteen platers all but two of which are old and hardy campaigners met in the second race and although Paul Connelly was given little con ¬ sideration In a betting way it did not stop the old Ballot gelding from winning He raced close up to the last quarter and taking the lead outstayed Amackassin in a hot finish Crumpsall the favorite was third after racing wide throughout throughoutARMY ARMY AND NAVY PURSE GOOD RACE RACEThe The Army and Navy purse was well contested from barrier rise to the finish Night Raider taking the lead in the last eighth and drawing clear in the last few strides Johns Umma was the pacemaker from the start but his early efforts told on him and he was no match for the winner nor Trantula the latter geting second money moneyColumbine Columbine was another favorite to win the Forman standardbearer easily triumphing in the fifth race She had to overcome early interfer ¬ ence but once clear she took
