HANOVERS VAST INFLUENCE His Blood Potent in England France and Australia Controversy as to Whether Glen coe or Irish Birdcatcher Trans ¬ mitted Most Potent Strain XEW TOUIC N Y April 2 The constant ap ¬ pearance of the blood of Hanover in the pedigrees of many of tin best thoroughbreds not only in this country but in England France Germany and Australia serves to confirm the Injlief expressed by experts that this sire will have an influence on the blood stock of the future equal to that of his renowned ancestor Glencoe to which he traces through both sire and dam damThe The idea has been general that Hanover derived his merit from Glencoe and the fact that lie was of the same color a rich golden chestnut is given in support of the theory The distinguished pedi ¬ gree expert W II Howe while willing to con ¬ cede fliat Glencoe had something to do with the prepotency of Hanover says that the claims of Irish Birdcatcher in this respect cannot well be ignored The fact that Hanover was a chestnut in color while both of his parents were bays led Mr Howe to trace the color line in Hanovers tabulated pedigree Tlie color succession appeared to be Forence Weathcrwitch and Birdcatcher and the individuality of Hanover was so strkingly like that of Halls picture of Birdcatcher that the Birdcatcher deduction seemed inevitable inevitableOn On one occasion Milton Young of whose Mc Grathinnu Slml Hanover was the head was Hs ciusing the horse and his origin witli Mr Itowe who culled his attention to the resemblance of Hanover to Birdcatcher Barring a slight difference in the markings the horses were co terparts making due allowance for Harry Hall idealiza ¬ tion of the heads and necks of all the jises he painted Mr Young was astonished at the like ¬ ness and often commented on it Hanover was a horce of exquisite form and Birdcatcher was reckoned the handsomest horse of his day dayIt It was on the third day of July at Momnouth Park that Hanover made bis first appearance in a race He won the Hopeful Stakes in the colors of the Dwyer Bros and James McLaughlin rode hjm Tlie whitefaced colt ran like a champion waiting on the others until near the finish The critics thought lie went a trifle too high in front to be a great horse hut lie won his other starts that year and entered upon his threeyearold career with a great reputation It can be truthfully said that lie never ran a bad race During his racing which began in 1S84 and terminated in 1888 he dodged nobody and ran over all sorts of tracks He won a total of thirtytwo times and was un ¬ placed but twice His winnings amounted to 11S872 11S872CARRIED CARRIED FAMOUS DWYER BROS COLORS COLORSAll All of Hanovers racing was done under the colors of Dwyer Bros It was a stable in which there was no room for drones and the lordly son of Hindoo and his fleet associate Kingston were raced as Unsparingly as the selling platers in the same establishment When Hanover broke down lie was fired and later nerved It was due to the latter operation that the breeding industry of the United Slates was robbed of tlio services of this wonder ¬ fully prepotent horse as lie had to be destroyed at the age of fifteen due to the loss of a hoof Had he not been nerved he would have been avail ¬ able in the stud for at least ten years longer His associate Kingston got some of his best per ¬ formers long after lie had passed the twentieth milestone milestoneThe The general mipression has been that Hanover passed directly from the Dwyer control to Mr Young but this is incorrect as lie was bought by the late F C OReilly a New Jersey contractor who owned the fleet mare Connemara and was sold by him to the Kentuckian whose fortune he made It would take a volume to tell of what Hanover has done for the turf His sons and daughters were conspicuous on the race course and later in the stud they exerted an influence which lias spread over the entire globe Hamburg Halma David Garrick Yankee Handspring Buck Massie Abe Frank Handspun Homespun Handsel Hand ¬ some Glenheim The Commoner Compute Ben IIol laday Hanover Queen King Hanover Urania and Sanders are a few that suggest themselves Ham ¬ burg Halma Handspring Abe Frank Yankee The Commoner and Compute were his best sons in the stud Daughters and granddaughters of the former are priceless while the blood of Halma is held in the highest regard in France through the perform ¬ ance of his son Oversight which was not only a winner of the French classics but is now a success ¬ ful sire He was most highly prized by his late owner W K Vanderbilt in whose colors lie ran ranIt It is through his daughters however that Han ¬ over lias achieved immortality Bhoda B taken to Ireland by Bichard Croker and bred to Orme founded a family through her son Orby whose untimely death checked a career of the greatest brilliancy Orby himself won the Epsom Derby in 1II7 and his son Grand Parade won in 101 Last year his son Orpheus and his daughter Diadem the latter one of the best sprinters in England were first and third in the Champion Stakes The year ¬ ling progeny of Orby lias been iisrcrly sought after at the great sales at top prices pricesDurbar Durbar whose granddam Urania was by Hanover won the Derby in 114 for Herman B Dnryea wliile Sir Martin son of Lady Sterling by Han ¬ over was the best horse in the great English classic in 1009 and would have won it If he had not fallen at Tattenham Corner As the Derby is considered the greatest of the British spring tests the prom ¬ inence of these descendants of Hanover few in number in comparison with the Englishbred con ¬ testants qualityTlie must be taken as a guide to their quality Tlie blood of Hanover is breeding on through Hamburg also His daughters have thrown such good ones as Begrct Thunderer Chicle and Rick ¬ ety while his granddaughter Greenvale is the dam of Tryst which threw the crack Tryst er which many believe will lie the best threeyearold of the year 1lurlbus another highly regarded colt has it through his grandsire Inflexible The strain continues through Teas Over the dam of the sires Ort Wells Dick Welles and Dick Finneli Colline bred to The Scribe and taken to Australia foaled Lempriere winner of the Australian Cup CupIt It is blood worth preserving whether it Is ren ¬ dered potent by Glencoe or Birdcatcher Each was a great horse and perjiaps Hanover got desirable qualities from boih of them
