OUR FOUR YEAR OLD CHAMPIONS BALLOT STAR OF 1908 THE ONLY UNBEATEN HORSE HORSEAND AND THE LEADING MONEY WINNER OF HIS AGE AGEDIVISION DIVISION IN SIXTEEN YEARS OF RACING Although the fouryearold thoroughbred is generally considered to be at the zenith of Ills capabilities scanty provision Is made for horses of that age In comparison with the money offered for two arid three yearolds In fact under our lopsided system of today there is not a single stake race of importance for fouryearolds in North America Considering the enormous present distribution of money there is a scandalous lack of weightforage races for horses four years old and older Of course the fouryear olds have the big handicap to get along with as host they can but those of great value arc few and the earning opportunities are limited for horses of that age ageThe The greatest total of money won by a fouryearold in our racing since 1905 fell to Ballot In 1908 lie started five times and won the Century Stakes Advance Stakes Standard Stakes Equality Stakes and Suburban Handicap Of these only the Suburban Handicap is now in existence Except the Gold Cup at Belmont Park nothing has been provided in recent years to take the places of such races and the imagination of presentday racing officials does not seem to extend beyond handicaps and more rich stakes for twoyearolds Maybe some one of the fertile mentality of J G K Lawrence in devising conditions will make his appearance and he able to remedy some of the inequalities now so strikingly apparent iii the distribution of our vast provision
