GRAND NATIONAL WINNERS ON STAGE The oldtime English jockey and trainer Arthur Yates is hale and hearty though in his eightieth year As a jockey he rode 4CO winners and as a trainer he scored 2055 wins jumpers being Ms specialty He relinquished the business of train ¬ ing in 1914 Cloister was trained by Yates when he won the Liverpool Grand National of 189 Another celebrity he trained was Roquefort He only gave 150 for him won numerous steeplechase with him but unfortunately did not fancy him fcr i the Jrand National and prior o his victory at Aintrce sold him for 5000 The horse changed hands several times after this and Abington Baird made Yates a present of him Finally he came into the hands of Leonard Boyne the the ¬ atrical manager and closed his eventful career by winning the National on the stage for some hundreds of nights in succession Somewhat singu ¬ larly Voluptuary winch won the National the year 1 before Roquefort pulled off the same great race also went on the stage Judges pronounce Cloister to IK the best horse ever trained by Yatcs but others Yates himself give the palm to Defence The veteran considered the latter to be an absolute certainty for the Grand National but his own r died shortly before the race
