FORT ERIE OPENS TODAY Niagara Stakes and Lafayette Hotel Purse the Inaugural Day Attractions. BUFFALO, X. Y., July 1. Fort Erie opens tomorrow. Never before in the history of the Niagara Racing Association were conditions more auspicious for a wonderful race meeting. Every stall is occupied, or will be when the consignment that raced at Hamilton reaches the track across the border. The class of horses is superior to those of former years. The track is in fine condition and the plant is in thorough readiness to entertain tins immense crowd that is expected tomorrow. The Niagara Stakes, for two-year-olds, is the stellar attraction of the inaugural program, with the Lafayette Hotel 1urse sharing interest. Ten good young racers will clash in the stake feature and a fine contest is looked for. Second Thoughts is the overnight favorite, but there are several others, such as Corenzio. Caretakdr, Ogarite, Johnny Dundee and Captain Scott that will not lack admirers. The overnight races filled well, large fields being named in in all of them and some excellent sport seems in prospect for the large crowd of local race followers, who are anxiously awaiting the bugle call for the first of the 1921 meetings at the popular course across the line. The management calls attention to the law recently passed in Canada which makes it a criminal offense to wager on horse races other than through the mutuel machines. This means that anyone caught making handbook will be arrested and taken to Welland for trial. Seven provincial policemen will be sent from Welland to see that the law is enforced. As during the meetings last year, separate machines for betting will be in operation at Fort Erie. There will be machines for American money and machines for Canadian money, and those who bet in American money will be paid off in United States currency.
