FINE RACING FOR A FRIDAY . Budana Wins the Kentucky Stakes From Duncecap Luckily, t Valley of the Moon a Victress John Paul Jones Runs a Fast Mile Jock Scot Again. . : SARATOGA. X. Y.. August 20. The iitmiRur.iI race nt three-quarters for three-year-old f ills brought to the post some fust cues, with 5. I. "Wideners Last Straw, piloted by Sande. attracting favoritism. Valley of the Moon had support, the Fator following continuing loyal. Iolytliia dpveloped marked strength, the change to Carroll from Slaughter and the absence of the four bandages she had on her legs in her last race causing an air of expectancy. She displayed her true form in the race and with better luck would have won. Fleet-footed Valley of the Moon handled hcr-olf adeptly at the barrier; secured an advantage at once and held to the lead for the entire race, although forced to do her best at the end by the pressing challenge of Iolytliia. The favorite got into trouble early, overcame it when rounding the turn and was in a fair way of overhauling the leader in the stretch, but tired in t lie last sixteenth. The steeplechase for maidens at this style of racing resulted in the downfall of another favorite, "when Franc Tireur failed to overhaul Surf, the winner, which had led from the start. War Victor finished third. Five started, but "Woodruff unseated his rider at die fifteenth jump. Surf jumped fairly well "niiil took tIu!-Tcad:it" once, followed "by Franc Tireur. The latter blundered at some of the hedges but recovered promptly and made a game rush on the flat, btit was not good enough. "War Victor, after having been kept far back for the first round of the course, luoved up promisingly at the .twelfth jump, but tired when pressed hard. "Woodruff was Kdlug fairly well at the time that his jockey came to grief. McMauus, who had the mount, escaped injury. Todays racing hud an off-day tinge, in spite of a stake race, the Kentucky Stakes, under selling conditions, but having only three starters. The Rnn-cocns-Siuclair-Hildreth followers played lucky here. Their Kudniia scored a questionable victory over It. T. Wilsons Duncecap, with Galcta following. Less tlinn two lengths covered the distance between the trio at the finish, the winner having a margin of u length. Willi another sixteenth to go Duncecap would have reversed the decision with the winner. One was tiring, the other gaining steadily. The start played an important part in the result. Hudtina was away fully in motion. Duncecap tardily, the result of an assistant starters failure to release his hold on her in time and causing her to prop. When straightened away she was fully live lengths back of the swift going liudana. and the first quarter found her nearly ten lengths in the rear of the lender. She gradually moved up, but in the stretch she was still many lengths away. In . the last sixteenth she slipped through between Onlita and the inner rail and made a Until rush, -which gradually enabled her to reach within a length of the now ras-tiring I.udana. The race had a net value of ,225 to the winner. WEATHER DELIGHTFUL AND CROWD LARGE. Delightful weather was here and the attendance was notably good. Most of the lute comers intend to remain for tomorrows great lacing. Sunn: "will continue for the remainder of the meeting. The card was again depleted by withdrawals. The heretofore unbeaten Tody sustained her first tlOfcat. but il was not a lack of speed that brought it ubntit. It was due to the blundering ride she had from McAfee, who kept her under hard ro-Ktruint when she was full of impulse to run and in the stretch brought her wide, a combination thai rnuscil her to tire right at the end and enable .Tohii Paul Jones and Frigate to beat her to the finish by a slight margin. Robinson, on John Paul Jones, took advantage of Tody coming wide and forcing Frigate out and slipped his mount through next the inner rail to ultimately succeed by a head. Kirklevjngtou was the favored one in the race, but he was far back in the early running and closed up witli a too lute rush in the stretch. It was the general verdict of close observers that hud McAfee allowed Tody to run freely she would have won. The time was fast for such hoives. The perennial Jock Scot again figured in a winning performance nnd took the fourth race from Old Dad and Pickwick. Jock Scot was a receding favorite, due to stout backing for Suunylund. The inurket about Hie latter was a frenzied one and persisted, many of the sharps being caught in it. Sunny hi nil began slowly and Fator had a good view of tlie others for the entire race. Jock Scot, after being held under restraint until in the last eighth, Kliot away from the others to win with Hpeed in reserve. Old Dud. prominent all tin; way. held on well through the final drive, but was out t the lust ounce to keep in advance of Pickwick. Mortimer L. Schwartz Toil, a former winner at 11is meeting, took the closing race on todays card, in which Santa Clara hud Tieen supported with rare confidence. Long Isluud, a winner in his last race, was totally friendless atid drifted in price at an alarming rate. Ailing underpinning, from which he suffers and which was manifest in his uppearuncc when going to the post, was responsible for his market slump. Toil, showing a fine display of speed, was quickest to show at the start, with Long Island and Santa Clara the tardiest and fur buck of the others. Toil quickly shook off his earlier followers anil at one time hud a six lengths lead. In. the stretch Aknusti gave stern chase and gradually decreased this lead, but Toil crossed the finish line well in advance. Lord I.ultimorc ran well ill shouldering his 121 pounds, outstaying the others for third place. Long Isluud and Santa Clara were at no time dangerous. FINE RACING- FOR A FRIDAY Continued from first page. jockey Yeargin, for his faulty ride on Leatherface in the race won by Natural Bridge in his race of Tuesday. Leatherface finished third in the race after a poor exhibition on the part of Yeargin. Nancy F. and Rainboy Boy, owned by Frank J. Farrell, were shipped tonight to Jamaica. The remainder of the Farrell horses were transferred from Gravesend to the same track today. Wm. J. Ryan was .among the visitors who will stay for the remainder of the meeting. Jockey Lyke returned tonight to Kentucky with the E. R. Bradley horses, which were shipped to Latonia. Charles Kohler claimed Old Dad for ,405. The program for Saturday is one of the best of th meeting and should draw a tremendous crowd, eacli of the stake races having fields that promise the keenest sort of contention. No better band of horses lias been put together this year than those named for the Merchants and Citizens Handicap and while the history of the race is remarkable for the quality of the finishes that have marked it, there is every probability that the race of 1021 will equal any of them in interest. The presence of Miss Joy in the Spinaway Stakes is no -doubt responsible for the size of the field in that noted race for fillies. At the weights she will have no time to loaf, as Calamity Jane and Collinga are both fast. Jeanne Bowdre was sent on from Kentucky especially for this race, which wiis won in the past by the Messrs. Keene with Jacoba. The Saratoga Steeplechase has every jumper of note in the United States engaged, witli Sweepment carrying top weight, as he should because of his form. If lie is as good as lie lias shown in the past the horse that beats him will win. He has so much speed that it is difficult to place him at a disadvantage through the field. Earlocker, Souninngha, Bullseye, Houdiui and Syrdarya are all at the top of their form and they will press Mrs. Loft,s. fine juniper hind at the finish. Admiral C. T. Grayson was an arrival this morning, and gave jockey Keogli a close examination, but decided on bringing an x-ray into use. Meantime he has ordered the injured rider to refrain from overexertion and for the present it is thought ho will be an absentee from the saddle until the opening of the Laurel meeting. Vincent Powers came over today from Now York to ride Soumaugha in the steeplechase tomorrow. Max! Hirschs horses will be transferred to Belmont Park tomorrow, to await the opening of racing there. Tlio horses that John F. Schorr will race at Belmont Park for Mr. E. B. McLean were shipped from Windsor yesterday and include The Porter and Dream of Allah. The latter will he a starter in the Futurity. J. Butwell will do the riding for the stable.
