DORVALS GOOD BEGINNING Large Crowd Sees Interesting Racing Night Raider Beats Registrar in Main Contest. MONTUKAL. fjuc., Aug. 20 The Lakeside Purse, which was offered as the feature attraction at Dor-val Park this afternoon, and fashioned for three-year olds and over, nt one mile, brought together ii small but well balanced band of racers. The winner turned up in Night Hauler, a recent arrival from Saratoga that races for G. W. Formaii. J. K. L. Koss Itegistrar was second, while Lads Love finished third. The distance was run in 1:3S, which establishes a new track record, clipping one" and two-fifths from the old mark established some time ago. Of the rive that were entered but one declined the issue Star Kealm. The start was a good one and Zouave was the one to set the pace until rounding .the turn into the back stretch, where Hegistrar moved up and assumed the lead. Then Night Haider came up with a rush and was forced to come around the leaders, and drew out into a safe lead at the end under a hard drive. Ideal weather conditions favored the opening day at Dorvul Park this afternoon and coupled with a well-balanced program served to bring out a large crowd. The truck conditions were much improved over those of lust spring and fast time was displayed in each race. The running of the second race was productive of a disqualification and a suspension for jockey Atkinson astride Fair and Warmer. The hitter continued to bear out over on Carry On and Atkinson used his whip with telling effect over Hoinanelli, who was astride the ultimate winner. This was the first disqualification at Dorval since the resumption of racing in Montreal, and the second in the vicinity. The case of jockey Atkinson, who was suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the stewards, will be carried on till the next meeting of the Canadian Hacing Associations, to which body a recommendation for action will be taken. Spirited racing prevailed and the biggest majority of the winners were forced to sustain long and hard drives to gain the decision. The running of the third race was productive of a spectacular finish in which Cormoran outlasted Sister Susie at the end by a short nose. The winner was ridden by McTaggart. At the eighth post in the race any one of the first five starters appeared to have a chance to win. Fast Trial scored a victory for II. Neusteter when she got up in the closing strides to dispose of Chloris in a spirited finish in the first race. Fancier was third. Another spectacular finish came with the running of the fifth race, in which Darnay got up in the closing strides to nose out Sentimental. The latter was used up following the pace cut out by Veteran and tired in the final strides. Among recent arrivals today were T. Harrier, M. F. Foley and Thomas Marshall. The hitter raced the useful mare Translate some years back. The racing ollicials for the meeting include: Stewards. Douul Haymond. Dr. ..WA. Leniieux. Maj. John T. Mcl.ridc and J. P.. Campbell; steward representing Canadian ltacing Associations. Francis Nelson; presiding judge, David Gillies; starter, Hurry Morrissey: raring secretary, Sheridan Clark. Word was received from Toroulo this morning of the death of .1. Walker, bl.iiher to V "Hod" Walker. The horses of the latter, which were entered I today, were immediately ordered withdrawn. James Hicks will leave for Jamaica, L. I., in a few days and resume riding at tlie fall meetings in New York and Maryland. Jockey J. Howan, under contract to the K. F. AVhitney stable, arrived from Saratoga this morning and will ride for the Seagram Stable during this meeting and at I!lue Ronnets. Denny lieach has taken over the boys book for outside mounts. Hay Sliver, accompanied by jockey Howard Stearns, will leave for Hagerstown, Mil., to participate in the smaller meetings that precede the opening of the Maryland regular fall season. The Saratoga division of the J. K. L. Hoss stable will ship from that point to ISlue Bonnets on Monday. The entire division will be stabled at 151ue Rennets to race in Canada for tlie remainder of the Canadian season. F. W. Ashe was kept busy this morning distributing tlie stake blanks for the fall meeting to be held at Havre de 5 race. Major Dr. M. Crawford, chief coroner of Toronto, was a visitor at the course this afternoon and will remain for a few days. The riding colony was swelled this morning by tlie arrival of jockeys J. Dieyer.
