RUNSTARS LUCKY VICTORY Narrowly Escapes Defeat in Hochelaga Handicap Marinelli Rides Three Winners. MONTREAL, Que., September S. A. B. Spreckels Runstar, the chestnut colt by Runnymede Salva-trix, which was considered earlier in the year by the Spreckels connections superior to the unbeaten Mor-vich when the latter was in tho Californians stable, won the Hochelega Handicap, the eleventh running of which was the feature of todays program at Blue Bonnets. Runstars victors was far from decisive. In fact, the majority of the spectators were outspoken in their belief that J. K. L. Ross Marble was the best horse in the race and but for the others backing up in front of him at the sixteenth post, forcing his rider to pull liim up, the Ross starter would have won. Runstar was tho favorite and set a fast pace, with Corenzio in closest pursuit. On the stretch turn Runstar came wide and Buxton, on Johnny Dundee, saw his opportunit3" and sent his mount to the inside, saving much ground and forcing tho Spreckels colt to a hard drive to hold his advantage. The trio were closely bunched at the sixteenth post, where Claver endeavored to come through with Marble, witli the result above mentioned. After the Boss colt was eliminated it appeared as if Johnny Dundee would finally triumph, but he failed by inches. The race, which had au added value of ,000, was worth ,550 net to the winner. The only one that declined the contest was Stacy Adams, which was coupled with Johnny Dundee in the betting. Track conditions were all that could be desired and a crowd of large proportions was present. The racing proved interesting and the speculatively inclined had a good lino on the different starters, with the result that the majority of the winners were well supported. A chapter of accidents attended the running of the steeplechase, which had a field of six. McCorburn was returned the winner from Sea Sun and Martian. The latter pair were coupled in the wagering and Veitch, on Martian, rode an apparently indifferent race, as his stablemate was iu front and looked like a winner.but tired badly through the final eighth, being eased up at the end. Flying Frog and Le Cyprin unseated their riders and Green, on the latter, was sent to a local hospital to determine the full extent of his. injuries if any. Blake recovered quickly and be3-ond a shaking up was all right. JOCKEY MERIMEE SUSPENDED. Following the running of the opening dash, in which First Pullet finished ahead of Marmitc and Panaman, jocke3 Merimee, astride Approval, was suspended hy the stewards pending an investigation of his ride, which was described . as listless. C. S. Wilson has been granted permission to run his horses on all tracks on the Canadian circuit. Oaklawn Belle and others comprise the string. Joeke3 Marinelli, the New York Italian who was the star rider at Tijuana last winter and still holds the leadership of the American jocke3s for the year because of his successes at the Mexican track, jumped into tho limelight this afternoon b3- piloting three winners Runstar, Asterisk and Trickster II. In the fifth race at one mile J. K. L. Ross Bastille, a chestnut colt by Voter Oppression, gave a sparkling exhibition to beat Betty J. Tho latter was away slowl3 while the Ross colt led throughout. Near the end Betty J. was wearing the winner down, but, the son of Voter displayed great gameness and successfully resisted the best efforts of the speeds- Hodge filly. Steeplechase jockey S. Veitch, Jr., was suspended after a conference held by tho stewards following the running of the race through the field today and his case has been referred to the Canadian Racing Associations. He had the mount on Martian. Sheridan Clark has been appointed 133- the Con-naught Park Jockey Club to take charge of tho transportation of horses to Ottawa from different points. Jockey Thurber was forced to cancel his riding engagements for this afternoon, due to an attack of illness. Dr. F. W. Ashe has been appointed paddock judge for the coming meeting at Ottawa. The eleven yearlings at present at the Vercheres Farm of J. K. L. Ross will he transferred to the farm at Laurel, Md., at the close here. The youngsters will receive their first racing lessons there. John Liirasden of Ottawa, well-known Canadian owner of steeplechasers, was an arrival today.
