UNWELCOME RAIN ONCE MORE Latonia Track Is Drenched and Wholesale Scratching Follows. Firebrand Runs a Good Race and Takes the Main Feature of the Day Track Talk. LATONIA, Ky., September 30. Firebrand find H. H. Coleman, a pair that have so far survived the strenuous three-year-old crind of thia.year and both having stake successes to their credit, furnished the chief contention in todays best race here, a mile and an eighth handicap having a yalue of ,000 added. Firebrand winning quite easily tinder a skillfull ride by Lyke. The rough going "was in his favor and the colt raced in his best style. Lyke hurried him along steadily from the outset and the first half mile found Blanche -Mac, which had essayed keeping him outpaced, disposed of. Thereafter Firebrand set the pace and was always master of the situation, although H. E. Coleman made a game rush at him in the lost quarter. Sands of Pleasure, after his customary habit, was far back in the early running, but came with a rush to outstay Peace Pennant for third place. A terrific storm that centered in this locality during the night played havoc with the going and also left wintery weather behind it. As a result of the changed track conditions withdrawals were again plentiful and the substitution of an extra face t;o complete the seven race offering iiad ,to be rpported to in the case of the fourth race. This was oh account of the inability of most of those enteted.,oyernight torun well in the difficult going.; Considering tlio adverse conditions and the offdny nspect; of tlie program a surprisingly large as-fieinblflge viewed the sport. Several of the dashes devplofred interesting finishes, though for the most part the respective winners had comparatively easy times of it. Oallaher Brothers representatives figured in a winning double during the afternoon, their Tulane niitl Glyn accounting for the pair of dashes for two-year-olds. Tulane needed Pools best skill to land him in front of Cloughjordan, but Glyn never gave his backers any anxiety and sprinting into the lead right at the start increased his advantage to ultimately win by as wide a margin as his rider elected. Betting wisdom was all awry at tlie outset, the punters being sadly astray in their calculations on the first four races, but they recovered some ground by the successive victories of Firebrand and Glyn. The latter was the shortest priced choice of the afternoon; Joe Goodman began the upsets when lie won the first race from the favorite, Meliora. The latter had appeared a certain winner when rounding into the stretch, but she gave way suddenly in the last eighth, Cloughjordan, which has been a disappointing figure in nearly all his races, again proved a failure in the maiden dash, Tulane beating him to the finish by a scant margin. Guaranteed had an outstanding call in the third race, but she never figured seriously at any part of the running, Allivan winning here, mainly through Parkes action on Amanda in taking her out from the inner rail and permitting the Williams filly to slip through and win in the last stride. GIPSY QTJEEX TAKES SUBSTITUTE EACE. The substitute, dash found Gipsy Queen the vic-trts. She led the ten others from the start and her triumph was foreshadowed after she had traversed a quarter of the three-quarters route. Richelieu, after making a slow beginning, wore the others down for second place and Service Flag was third. Tie favorite, Bagazza, ran a poor race here. The concluding race fell to Alex Jr., which was much, the best in the going and was ridden in surprisingly confident style, for Gregory took him far back in the early running, but when he did free lilra from restraint he raced into the lead with a runty and held the race safe in the last eighth. Tnlsa was a disappointment here and failed to get a part of the purse. George Land, in addition to training several of tlie yearlings he bought for the account of a prominent local racing patron, will secure several horses that be intends to campaign next winter in New Orleans. John A. Pasine, insurance agent, has entered suit to recover 75 from Lloyd Gentry, who yesterday disposed of all of his horses at public auction. The plaintiff states the money is due as a premium 90 an insurance policy issued on the horsa Sir Thomas Kean. Frank J. Brucn announced today that John Hach-meistor, who served as presiding steward at Oriental Park last winter, had been reappointed to that position. Mr. Hachmeister made a most capable racing official last winter at the Cuban track. The news that lie will again be in the stand will be welcome to his many friends. Mr. Bruen, who has been eminently successful In his mission here of interesting the horsemen in the Havana meeting, will depart Saturday morning fop New York. He will afterward go to Kenil-worth and will be in Louisville the last week of the Churchill Downs meeting to make final preparations for the special horse train that will leave Louisville for Havana at the termination of tlie Churchill Downs meeting. The program book embracing the first six days Of the Churchill Downs meeting, beginning October 1?, was distributed to owners this morning. Tlie Falls City Handicap and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes are a pair of the features contained in the initial program and will have their respective de-cisions October 12 and 10.
