I ! J J a t i I • I • I i 1 LOWLY PLATER A WINNER 1 Lone Pine Furnishes a Surprise at Tijuana — I Main Race to Buckhorn II. TIJUANA. February 26. — That sire of many mud runners and rough track horses, Deutschland, which j stood for years in the stud at the Nevada Stock ., Farm and whose offspring have been prominent in western racing, sent a good horse to the races Saturday. This was Lone Pine. Once upon a time the mere mention of this horses name, even in a field of the cheapest platers would have been the signal of laughter. It was something on this order yesterday, that is before the fifth race at five- i eighths of a mile, but after the race, well, it was different story and a few were willing to shout , the praises of Lone Pine from the housetops. | Totally unheralded and unexpected, neglected in i the wagering and scorned by the form followers. Lone i Pine got up to win the race from Grace Trimble | and paid 50 to 1. The winner was a forward eon- | tender from the start, saved ground entering the stretch and his rider, jockey D. Hurn. made no i mistakes. The favorite, Galway, finished third. | Saturdays card of eight races was contested in , that well-known springlike weather which the East enjoys along about May 15. The crowd of regulars was swelled appreciably by the advance guard of race enthusiasts from the southwest drawn here i by the 0,000 U. S. Grant Hotel Handicap at one | and one-eighth miles Sunday. For the first time ■ during the present meeting the program for Sunday will comprise nine races and unless all signs fail attendance records should go into the discards. Principal interest of yesterday was centered in | the sixth race, which was the first race at one and one-quarter miles at this meeting. Commander was installed favorite, Bourbon Green second choice and Buckhorn II. had the third greatest following. It remained for the third choice to take the big end of the purse, for Buckhorn II., from the C. B. Irwin stable, was victorious over Bourbon Green by three-quarters of a length. This son of Buckhorn was given a well-timed ride by jockey Pablo Martinez. He saved the horse close up until rounding the far turn, where he rushed him up to Bourbon Green, the leader, which he soon raced into defeat and won going away. Fannie Nail, which showed good early speed, tired in the final quarter, but held third place easily from Commander. C. B. IRWINS LUCK HOLDS. The Irwin stable and jockey Martinez scored again in the last race of the afternoon at three-quarters of a mile. This was with Orchid King. Martinez moved him up steadily while rounding the far turn. Soon he disposed of Madam Byng and then had plenty left to withstand the challenge of Bill Head, which ran second. Bill Head was just a head better than Bees Wing, while the latter held to third place by a nose from Madam Byng. McLane, which was installed favorite, evidently did not like the track and tired. Jockey Jackie Huntamer. who has been riding brilliantly and who was astride four winners Friday was unable to catch the judges eye yesterday and ended the afternoon without a set of brackets. However, he was within call on three occasions, for he rode Coombs, Bourbon Green and Little Less to the place in their races. In the three-year-old race at five and one-half furlongs the consistent Atheling II. filly Tabloid was a popular winner at 9 to 10. She proved much the better than her opponents and when jockey Studer moved her into the lead in the stretch she won as her rider pleased from Little Less and Plow Steel. It was announced by the stewards Saturday that the entry of the mare Cover Up will be refused for the next twenty racing days. This mare was recently claimed by H. D. Tate. The stewards allege that there was a violation of the claiming rule in the transaction. They also announce that all violations of this rule will result in severe punishment of those who do not respect the mandates of organized racing. There was only one claim for yesterday. This was the one which took Orchid King from the Irwin stable to the J. W. Tate string. The consideration was ,300.
