RACING FEVER IN THE AIR • , Close Approach of Spring Season Arouses Interest and Curiosity. i i Morvich Cynosure of All Eyes at Jamaica — Bunting a Slashing Big, Racy Looking Colt. i ♦ — - NEW YORK. N. Y., March 12 —Willi the open Ing of tli spring racing Benson less 1 1 ■ .-1 1 1 si weeks off and the frost leaving the ground in a way that promises a track fit to gallop over in the near future, there is an awakening of tlie raring spirit, which has lieon dormant since last October. Kverylsidy wants 10 know about the horses, especially the favorite* of last year. There is a particular imiuiry for the unbeaten champion Morvich. The eolt has had :i constant stream of visitors at Jamaica, where trainer Burlew has him in charge. Those who inspected Morvich before January 1 found the phenomenal youngster as rough as a workhorse and thoroughly enjoying the freedom of a large paddock. Karly in January the colt was taken up and the preliminary work for the campaign of 1922 was begun. He was not a big colt as a two-year-old. Init was larger than some of the best hoises we have had in the past, possessing the sort of disposition that usually goe with a good race horse. Now at three he is a racy looking, well-muscled colt, with more of the lines of the sprinter than Mayer in his makeup. That he won at a mile last .•■utumn. however, is an indication that he wil! race beyond the distances favored by his sire P.unnymedc and rrniidsirc Voter. The fact that the latter sent the good stayer* Kallot. The Manager. Electioneer and Hilarious to the races is in his lavor and gives force to the argument advanced toy the French that sprinters frequently sire stayers. No colt could look better at this stage of his preparation for the coming campaign than Morvich does and. barring accidents, he will be ready for liis engagements. Other three-year-olds which have come through the winter in fine condition are Lucky Hour. Kai-Sang. Hunting. Runantell. Sir Henry. Kroomster. Spanish Maize. Cnllantman. Runstar and Iillory. I.ucky Hour lacked the rugged |Ualiiies of some of those whose measure lie took easily. He is now it much more impressive individual than when he was making friends for himself and his sire. Hourless last fall, by defeating every colt he met with the exception of .Morvich. KAI-SANG WINTERED WELL. Kal-Nang. one of the most mature of last years colts is a well fashioned three-year old, beautifully balanced and all he has to do is to run ta his look* in order to have a following. Despite his ajaaff race at Pimlico late in the- fall, wliich was liis last appear:; n e. this three-year-old has too many good races to hi- credit in 19m to be overlooked. His repeated forays against Morvich and Miss Joy were enough to take the heart out of any ordinary race horse. Sam Hildreth docs not span-bis horse-, and KaiSang. having engagemenls ! • fill, was sent out for them. Bunting was a big colt at two. and he is a ula-her now. standing over as much ground as a four-year -old. He is entirely different type to his ■table companion Kroomster. whose Reek Sand dam is goin to help him as it did his ilt-f.itod b-othei r.roouispun. winner of the PlUiw — . and which was robbed of greater glory through the kick wliich caused his death at Aqaeaael in May. Harry Payne Whitney is • man who will be agreeably surprised if liuutin:: Mays over a long distance, as he pronounced him a sprinter after his rutruity victory. Mr. Whitney is one owner without illusions, in so fur as his own horses arc concerned. He look- for Mayers al I.rookdale when the get of .lohreii. by Spearmint, begin to come along. Perhaps Chicle, also by Spearmint, may help some in this direction, though there are good judges who prefer the female line of Johren. RUNANTELL A TYPICAL BEN BRUSH. Hnnanlell i~ another three-year old that is coming into spring training in fine condition. Tom WeNn has him .is healthy as a trout in appearance. This is a Ivpical Hen Hrnsh. big bodied and heavily muscled. While he is not over 15.1% hands hi»h he will weigh more today than his sire. Broomstick, did when as a three year old he beat Irtah Uki ler the Brighton Handicap, in which he established a liew record for a mile and a quarter. It is a pe culiarity of the Broomsticks that they grown long peat the average of other horses. Another iinh would render Runaiilell big enough for any purpose Kir Hei.ty and Spanish Maize were two colts that retired las; fall with high private reputation-. The former was not asked for mm h till the Maryland Futurity, .ii wliich race he am* badly placed in lineally running. He gave a touch of his real form in the Wa bleu when he was second to Relay, and in the opinion of good iudges he should have won that prize. Spanish Maize, fourth to Morvich. Lu.kv Hour ami Hunantell in the Maryland Futurity, with his weight up. was off next to last and was t lined lis fast us the winner. He was | big two year old and at three is a giant. By the -printer Spanish Prime his St. Frus.piin dam may help him to slay. He is the pi. k of the Koss three year old- and real things are expected of him by trainer Henry M. Daniel. Iillory and Kelny are both expected to make good, especially over a long distance, while there are g,,od judge- who look for Missionaiy to prove a thre--year-ohl beyond the ordinary. This son of Hourless had bad link in some of his races and he also de eloped a fault of running out on the turns. This latter characteristic probably robbed him of a victory over Audacious at Heltnont Iark in a high weight handicap. Like Ills stable companion I.ucky Hour, Mis-ioniiry is inbred to Rock S.ind. and the qualities of these colls are a testimonial to the soundness of Mr. Helmonts judgment as a breeder That consistent gelding Surf ltidei. wliich has encnt the winter in Kentucky, is expected at Bel- tnoiit Park in the near future. When he arrive-ptiietically all of the best of the three-year-olds that will hike pari in the feature events for their age hereabouts will be north of Mason and Dixons line Some of them will have had the advantage of an early preparation in Maryland, hut by May all should he ready to -how their form. Their quality in 19J1 would indicate racing of the best for the outstanding features of their age during the season ; of 1922.
