| I ANMER AT DOWNSVIEW STUD Much Interest in Stallion Donated to Canada I by King George. TORONTO, Ont, April 23.— Anmer, the magnificent seal brown thoroughbred stal- i lion, his majestys gift to Canada, arrived t early yesterdny morning at Weston, en route I to James C. Fletchers Downsview Stud, c to make a short season before returning I about May 15 to Ailsa Craig, where he has ; ; t been splendidly cared for by the veteran | | horseman, James McFarlane. j I The gracious and timely action of King:: George in making this gift to Canada a few! I years ago for the improvement of the thor- | | oughbred and half-bred stock has been much 1 ; 1 appreciated by the farmers and breeders j ] of Ontario. A splendid record has been ; made in the comparatively short time he 1 has been in the stud to produce a number I of thoroughbreds with racing success in j j addition to the large number of half-bred colts which Anmer has left in the western ; part of the province. Mr. James Fletcher reports the following foals during the past I few days at Downsview Stud: * Chestnut filly, by Anmer — Kock-On, by Trap 1 Rock. 1 Cliestnnt colt, by Anmer — Pampinea, by Marta i h Santa. j llrown colt, by Anmer — Highland Mary, by Chas. OMalley. Hay colt, by Anmer — Merode, by St. Simonian II., oct of Proud Daisy, by Pride, the latter mare being i the dam of Miss Joy, which gave such a good ac- : 1 count of herself in races during last year and ] proved to be one of the fastest two-year-olds of the , year. r Bay colt, by Anmer— Loganberry, by Galatin?, owned by W. A. Brodie. j Nearly all of the foals this year are colts and have been pronounced the strongest and • best crop one would wish to see, all pos- sessing remarkable quarters, forearms and J thighs. That Anmer will be a sire of ex- J ceptional runners is yet to be discovered. • Mr. Fletchers mares are choicely bred, hav- ing been selected in Kentucky from the best racing families, with due regard to producing blood lines. Many horsemen, from a sentimental feeling, have held earnest hopes that in Anmer would be found a successful sire. I ord Marcus Beresford selected him for such a purpose and it would be the highest mark of appreciation that could be shown to his majesty to find him the sire of stake winners, and especially for the Kings Guineas, j Besides being a winner in England at one and a quarter miles in the Hastings Plate, second in the Payne Stakes and Newmarket St. Leger, and third in the Royal Stakes, Anmer was his majestys Derby candidate in 1013. His sire, Florizel II., was the winner of the Ascot Gold Vase, Jockey Club Cup and Manchester Cup, and his brothers. Diamond Jubilee and Persimmon, both Derby winners for the late King Edward, went to Argentine Republic for the price of 50,000, where he has headed the list of winning sires for several years. Guinea Hen, the dam of Anmer, is also a dam of winners. She is by Gallinule, the sire of the famous Pretty Polly.
