sionary chestnut son of Hourless Mission ridden by jockey Schuttinger was returned the winner of the Sheiiandoah Handicap with R I Millers Sailing Along second and Spanish Maize third The race was a dash of a mile and seventy yards for threeyear olds under handicap conditions and served to introduce some of the Maryland candi ¬ dates for the Preakness Stakes and Ken ¬ tucky Derby The band that forced the starter was a small one five in all two overnight entries being scratched scratchedMissionary Missionary was accorded but weak support by the backers while J K L Ross Spanish Maize was installed a hot choice Off to a good start Missionary left from the extreme outside and made a fast pace for the first half pursued by Violinist while Spanish Maize brought up the rear After entering the backstretch Turner moved up on the outside with Spanish Maize and racing around the turn he loomed up as a seeming ¬ ly formidable contender Schuttinger saved ground with Missionary on the last turn and rushed him home an easy victor while Vio ¬ linist dropped back and finished a tired horse Sailing Along raced and finished gamely and outstayed Spanish Maize The latter raced wide on the turns and tired in the final eighth eighthMissionarys Missionarys race was a good one and he demonstrated that he will hold his own here ¬ after with nearly any of the threeyearold brigade in this section sectionRacing Racing conditions this afternoon were all that could be desired and a crowd of huge proportions journeyed to the course The racing furnished was of a spirited order and several of the winners only earned ver ¬ dicts after strenuous drives The form back ¬ ers were again a sea and failed to locate the majority of the winners long priced horses being in the ascendancy The track resulted in an upset for the backers when Eang guided Titania home an easy winner from TingaLing and Jago The winner made the running throughout and ended with a wide margin TingaLing be ¬ gan better than usual and disposed of Allah in the stretch drive Jago came from a long way back and took the short end of the purse Charlie Summy enjoyed favoritism and was prominent in the early running but quit badly in the final eighth eighthBessie Bessie Leighton overlooked in the specula ¬ tion was an easy winner of the twoyearold race at a half mile from Josephine C and Lank The start was a good one and before the field had gone many yards there was a considerable crowding and Gold Mount was the chief sufferer Bessie Leighton came on the outside of the leader at the head of the stretch and took a good lead in the final eighth Lank from a slow beginning fin ¬ ished with a rush and was going fast at the end Lough Red an outsider in the specula ¬ tion and racing for J W Healeyfi was re ¬ turned the winner of the third race a dash of a mile and seventy yards in a drive from Phalaris with Horeb third The winner came from the rear to pass the popular choice Phalaris in the final sixteenth sixteenthWalter Walter J Salmons Superlative graduated from the maiden ranks in the running of the fourth race of the day in a drive from The Peruvian and Star Jester The winner was ridden by Butwell and the latter can be credited with the victory when he brought the Salmon starter up on the outside in the final sixteenth and lifted him in a powerfully ridden finish The Peruvian came wide on the last turn and Butwell alert to the oppor ¬ tunity sent Superlative through on the in ¬ side and in a desperate finish got up on the closing strides although the winner was un ¬ decided until the official placing was dis ¬ played playedLunetta Lunetta accounted for the sixth race a dash of a mile and a sixteenth after a mild drive from Tippo Sahib and Lucky B The start was delayed for several
