WiNKFlELD ON LONG SHOT American Colored Rider Continues to Surprise French Racing Folks PARIS France April 10 The remark ¬ able form of M L Mantacheffs horses on Parisian race courses has continued and he heads the list of winning owners this sea ¬ son by a big margin having with some half dozen threeyearolds won nine races All the winners have been ridden by the Ameri ¬ can colored jockey James Winkfield and there has been nothing in the nature of a tight finish The stable gambles heavily and in addition to large sums taken out of the parimutuel betting machine certain opera ¬ tors in the ring have been hard hit The racing public quick to follow stables and jockeys in form are all for Mantacheff and the black rider Up to the present tl American jockeys ONeill McGee Garner and company have not particularly distin ¬ guished themselves but this group of ex ¬ cellent riders will probably be seen to greater advantage now that the classic season has commenced Some of the fashionable stables have not yet run any of their threeyear olds and until this happens we shall not be able to form much of an idea as to whai the French classic horses of the present year are like and whether good prospects exist for revenging past British victories in the Granc Prix next June JuneThe The opening racing at Longchamps was marred by wretched weather but fortu ¬ nately for the Societe dEncouragement the rain did not make its appearance until toe late to affect the gate receipts seriously The great racing attraction was Ksars appear ajice in the field for the Prix des Sablons Bullock had come over from England to ride him and his journey was not in vain for Ksar made several highlybred rivals look like commoners The crowds were delighted and gave both horse and jockey a flattering ovation on returning to the paddock Dur ¬ ing the afternoon Winkfield further distin ¬ guished himself on two occasions steering Gaurisanker another brilliant colt by Sar danapale bred by Baron Maurice de Roths ¬ child and sold out of his stable last year Winkfields other winner was a chance mount Labyrinth and no little sensation was caused when the parimutuel dividends Tvere announced Paying out at the rate of 44 to 1 in the paddock over 50 to 1 on the 1 course his price in the pavilion 10franc ring was no less than 70 to 1
