MARSHALL FIELDS GOOD ONE Frances Joseph Wins for the First Time of Asking at Newmarket NewmarketBy By E E COUSSELL COUSSELLLONDON LONDON England April C A coincidence of the results of the first day at Newmarket Craven meeting was that three of the win ¬ ners were sired by sons of Desmond They were Storo by Stornoway Dr Quill by Charles OMaliey and Francis Joseph by Hapsburg The last named winner by the way is now the property of Mr Marshall Field Ridden by Donoghue he won the threequarters of a mile Crawfurd Handicap by a neck from Marcia a daughter of Sir Martin and seventeen others othersAnother Another notable feature of that days rac ¬ ing was the fact that three of the winners were by sires which Sir Edward Hulton sent to the stud They were Storo by Storno ¬ way Verdict by Shogun and Spicey by Lonawand LonawandVerdict Verdict was bred by Lord Coventry vrho is now eightyfour years of age He is the oldest member of the Jockey Club having been elected fortytwo years ago Verdict is not in the Stud Book on both sides of her pedigree Shogun belongs to the Mayday family Verdicts dam is Finale by Peri ¬ cles She won at Birmingham the first of the three races in which she started and is a sister to Full Stop a winner of several hurdle races The next dam Parting Shot was by Petronel She bred about a half dozen winners under both rules Her dam won five flat races six hurdle races and six steeplechases This is known as Birdhills dam family and it has been in Lord Coven ¬ trys possession since 1SG2 Each of these bred numerous winners of sorts The found ¬ ress of the family was a mare by Newmin ster from Birdhills dam the latter mares pedigree was no doubt purposely lost This Newminster mare was bought about 1860 with a view to competing in halfbred stakes for hunters at some of the meetings in the north of England Judging by the subse ¬ quent records of the family it is obvious that this must have been the best half bred blood obtainable obtainableSpicey Spicey is a twoyearold brown colt which won the Fitz William Stakes worth about 2500 He was all out to beat by a head a lilly by Junior from Wild Witch Spicey is the fourth foal of Loumay which was of no use on a racecourse Her first two foals were sent abroad and won there She is by Louviers from a mare by Springfleid whose granddam was Eglantine She bred Briar Hoot winner of the One Thousand Guineas and Rose Garden from which comes The Tetrarch
