RACING CAREER OF PARAGON Recent Victory in City and Sub ¬ urban Rounded Out Record Eace Itself Lacking in Interest Story of Winners Disfigure ¬ ment as a Yearling BY R B COUSSELL LONDON England May I It must be many years since there was a race for the popular City and Suburban Handicap at Epsom as devoid of interest as Paragons recent victory Paragon was carrying top weight of 126 pounds An extraordinarily quick beginner he shot away from the start and was never headed at any point of the race He won comfortably by threequarters of a length from Monarch receiving ten pounds with Granely next receiving four ¬ teen pounds the same distance behind tho second horse horseThe The unlucky horse of the race was Silver Image which was half turned raund when the signal was given and lost several lengths This of course was fatal to tho chances of such a phenomenally speedy starter as Paragon Silver Image came down the hill in fine style and made up a tremendous lot of ground finishing fourth about a length and a half behind Granely Paragon is a good game horse which loves racing for its own sake He really wins his races from the start and never requires urging to do his best He is exactly j the sort of horse to give his jockey a com ¬ fortable ride but nevertheless Archibald wag tremendously pleased to win his first English victory in such a race as the City and Subur ¬ ban Handicap HandicapTAHAGOX TAHAGOX A GEXERAJi FAYORITE FAYORITEParagons Paragons success was most popular for the horse was a general favorite It was certainly a fine achievement and I cannot recall any other horse having won in suc ¬ cession the Jubilee Handicap the Duke of York Handicap and the City and Suburban SuburbanNo No other horse in the field looked better than Paragon Mr Gilpin was also delighted to have won another City for the last time the race was run in 1019 the same owner the veteran Sir E Paget and trainer secured the spoils with Cornsaek CornsaekPrevious Previous to Paragons success with 12G pounds on his back only five other horses carrying that weight or over had won the City and Suburban since the race was founded seventy years ago Probably the best of them was Bend Or whosi burden was the same as Paragons Velocity and I Master Kildare carried 128 pounds and Thunder holds the record with 122 pounds Neither of the last two horses can I think j be compared with Bend Or or Paragon Velocity was a good colt and his untimely death after one season at the stud seems a loss for English breeders judging by what his offspring did on the turf turfI I have told before the history of Paragon so that there is little fresh to be stated He is a mediumsized goodlooking horse with the exception that his off hock is dis ¬ figured due to an accident when a foal His dam died when the colt was ten days old A foster mother was secured In the early autumn the mare and foal were in a paddock alongside a road at Mercworlh in Kent where Lord Falmouth has his home and stud farm farmSOLDIERS SOLDIERS SCAIIE YOUNGSTERS YOUNGSTERSThe The animals were frigatened by a boister ¬ ous party of soldiers in motor lorries with the result that the foal galloped through or over a big hedge and fell into a ditch on the other side thus permanently disfiguring his hock The result was when he came up for sale at Newmarket in December 1919 when a yearling at which sale all the horses the property of the late Lord Fal ¬ mouth were sold many people were skep ¬ tical about W Wie ie vaughs story of the injured hock and refrained from bidding Mr Gilpin however bought the colt for Sir E Paget for the comparatively small sum of 3GOO 3GOOSo So far Paragon has earned for his owner about 514000 His racing record is as fol ¬ lows Year Bts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won 1919 62211 59S3 1920 7 2 1 1 3 obvious obviousMonarch Monarch took revenge for the Lincoln over Granely Childs who rode could make no excuses for his defeat by a better horse I think the distance was a bit beyond Mon irch which is a good colt up to a mile
