HIGHLAND TO BILLY WATTS Ranoocas ihreeYearGld Maiden Captures Jamaicas Feature Edgar Allan Poe Scores Double Doublefor for Kildreth When He Takes TakesAuburndale Auburndale Handicap NEW YORK N Y jlay 15 Billy Watts the maiden was the winner of the Highland Selling Stakes at Jamaica this afternoon It was the feature race of the program and brought about a good contest although right at the end it was won easily by the Rancocas Stables threeyearold threeyearoldThe The crowd was a surprisingly large one for a Monday and had been swelled consid ¬ erably by horsemen returning from Louisville and Baltimore Both big threeyearold races were run over again in the paddock by those fortunate enough to have been present at one or the other otherThe The day was an ideal one for the sport and while the card was not of especial im ¬ portance comprising as it did two races for maiden riders there was good racing and no lack of entertainment entertainmentEleven Eleven went to the post In the Highland which was a threequarters dash for three yearolds and it was a good contest all the way Richard T Wilsons Manna starting from the inside forced most of the pace Doughnut raced along with him and so closely lapped that Marinelli had to hustle the son of Zeus constantly to hold his place It would have been fatal to have taken him back and Doughnut kept him pinned in where all he could do was not to give an inch inchIn In the meantime Billy Watts starting from the outside was rushed up until he joined the two leaders Three eighths from the finish he forged slightly to the front and when L Fator brought him over slightly it made the position of Manna more precarious Manna was crowded back slightly and Billy Watts went into a safe lead leadCROWDING CROWDING HURTS MAUTTA MAUTTAThrough Through the stretch Billy Watts had no trouble holding his command and Brainstorm in the middle of the track finished with rare gameness to take second place Manna was coming again at the end but his crowding had cost him any share in the purse and he was beaten for third by William Daniels Olynthus OlynthusDoughnut Doughnut after having gone with Manna through the early stages quit badly but he had lasted long enough to play an important part in the defeat of Manna It is probable that with Doughnut out of the way Manna would have cut a much more important figure even had he not won wonSam Sam Ilildreth has made a real sprinter out of Edgar Allan Poe The latter made it a double for the Rancocas Stable when he was an easy winner of the threequarters mile of the Auburndale Handicap that fol ¬ low the Highland Selling Stakes StakesThe The son of McGee and Maltha took the lead at the start from an inside position and the result was never in doubt when he cut out a sizzling pace all tho way finishing out the distance in 111 to easily beat Frank J Farrells Dimmesdale while J E Wideners Last Straw top weight of the company under 117 pounds saved third from Mrs Lou ¬ ise Viaus Georgie GeorgieThe The latter was slow to begin and had to be hard driven to catch his company Ho went around on the outside and finishing with ex ¬ cellent courage closed a big gap gapHALDE2T HALDE2T JOCKEYS GET CHANCE CHANCETho Tho opening dash was a threequarters affair in which only jockeys that had never ridden a winner were eligible In fact the first two races were under the same condi ¬ tions tho second being a split of the first In tho first F Catrone graduated from the ranks of maiden jockeys by riding L A Fraylings Beckna to victory Margaret White raced into second placo and Welcome Stranger was third thirdMargaret Margaret White and Commissioner Eish mann ran away for a quarter mile before the start but it had no effect on the run ¬ ning When the start came Commissioner Eishmann dashed into a long lead and he looked like a suro winner until well into tho stretch There he quit badly and Beckna ridden out beat home Margaret White the one that had been racing second When The Commissioner began to stop he made a good job of It and fourth was his portion at the end A real horse race came with the running of the second half of the split when J W Fleischmans Bernice K beat home F Hop ¬ kins Dare and E W Prices Swift Grass out gamed George Choos Nightboat to take third place E Bell had the mount on Ber Contiiiucd uu Mfoad page HIGHLAND TO BILLY WATTS Continued from first page nice K and he rode a particularly well judged race while Shillick who piloted Dare also gives promise of making a rider Dare was the one to set the pace and Shillick saved ground with him all the way sitting still until the danger threatened in the stretch Bell had to drive Bernice K hard threeeighths from home to have her catch Dare and when he had the Hopkins three yearold headed he took hold of the filly and helped her with a hand ride Then inside the last sixteenth Dare was coming again and both boys rode with rare energy and considerable skill with the filly winner by half a length lengthW W R Cocs David Harum was an easy winner of the mile and seventy yards for selling platers that was the third offering of the afternoon and he had to be pounds the best of his company to score for he met with considerable interference in the running Translate and Valor were the ones to set the pace while David Harum after being repeatedly blocked was a distant follower through the bacltstretch He began to move up rounding the turn of the backstretch and after easily passing Henry G he gradually wore the leader down and after a mild drive early in the stretch came on to win with plenty to spare Translate after having set the pace held Valor perfectly safe through the stretch to take second place Henry G was at no time a serious contender
