NO VIOLATION OF THE LAW Louisiana Supreme Court Upholds Legality of Fair Grounds Method of Betting NEW ORLEANS La May 15 Events in the Louisiana racing squabble moved fast through Sunday and Monday and culminated this afternoon in the handing down of a de ¬ cision by the State Supreme Court that the method of betting in use at the Fair Grounds and Jefferson Park is not in violation of the Locke law Six of the nine members of the bench Indorsed the legality of betting on racing as at present conducted The decision means that no more concern need be felt over the passage or killing of the Clabourne racing commission bill and that the measure Introduced Into the legislature a few days ago probably will be dropped since even its supporters were beginning to feel that it stood little chance of passage because of the clause in the constitution of the state which labels gambling as a vice and pro ¬ nounces it the duty of the legislature to take steps to suppress the practice practiceSome Some legislation aimed at the destruction of racing may be brought up later in the session but with the Supreme Court decision of today as a vindication racing has a stronger lease on life here than in any year recently Incidentally the decision rendered today means that Tom Shaw Frisco Gardner Remy Dorr and Jack Sheehan will not be compelled to serve the six months jail sen ¬ tences or pay the 500 fines imposed upon them by Judge Humphries in the Circuit Court when District Attorney Robert H Marr haled them before that tribunal for alleged violations of the Locke law It also absolves fifty or more odds brokers who were brought to court by the same agency fol ¬ lowing the institution of suit against those mentioned Furthermore it lets out the di ¬ rectors and business officials of the Business Mens Racing Association without the dis ¬ agreeable necessity of standing trial on simi ¬ lar charges
