INTEREST WELL MAINTAINED Churchill Downs Racing Attracts a Fine Monday Attendance Rep Takes the Afternoons Chief Eace Flags Soundly Beaten Although Away Well BY J Tx DEMPSEY DEMPSEYLOUISVILLE LOUISVILLE Ky May 15 An attend ¬ ance far in excess of the usual Monday gath ¬ ering was present at Churchill Downs thia afternoon The throng included many who had come to witness the Derby and who intend to prolong their visit hero for some time While the scenes of Derby Day were conspicuously absent there was however re ¬ freshing interest in the sport and activities were such that it required a full mutuel crew to look after the wants oC those specu latively inclined There was no outstanding features the card being a well arranged one with fields in each of the seven dashes so well matched that they brought diversified backing resulting in liberal odds being ob ¬ tained against the various winners winnersThe The mile and an eighth dash under claim ¬ ing conditions held the chief interest and furnished a fast run contest Rep the win ¬ ner turning in 1 52 for the distance Having in view his good showing on Saturday when Rep finished in second place there was lib ¬ eral support for him though Uncle Velo ruled the actual choice Unlike in his former race when he began tardily Rep raced into a commanding lead at once this afternoon and held sway for the entire way Uncle Velo race and at one time appeared capable of passing the leader on call but Rep had enough in reserve to always hold hhn safe Paris Maid was best of the other starters and landed in third place placeThe The erratic Flags which has been a source of annoyance to backers and starters for several years again figured in a losing per ¬ formance This time in the fifth race in which a good band opposed him at three quarters After acting badly for a time ho finally got away with the others and flat ¬ tered by leading until he reached the stretch where he began sulking and ultimately brought up outside the money Frank J Kelleys Gangway a first timer for this year winning in easy fashion from Dorothy Buclc ner with Colonel Baker in third place place3IAY 3IAY BODIKE PROY35S BEST BESTFifteen Fifteen the largest number that has start ¬ ed In any one Kentucky race this season and this number only permissible here in races where the start is out of the chute met in the opener May Bodine proved the best and won with ease after having virtually led from the start Wm Oldt was a lucky second with Troilcs getting third place There were four grouped behind the winner so closely that there was a difference of opinion as to the correctness of the placing some thinking Comedie d Amour had finished in second place placeDr Dr Rae a longtime absentee from racmg made good in the second race for which Young Adam was the favored one with Virgo also coming in for much support The win ¬ ner dashed into the lead after going a half mile and won in a canter canterMontfort Montfort Jones Corto had the call In th third race in which twoyearold fillies took part but Poppye won in game style from the outsider Yalta which had showed tha most early speed and was holding on sur ¬ prisingly well until In the last stcteentSj where she gradually succumbed to the wie ¬ ners persistency Corto was put to a hard drive to outstay Finday for thinl place placeEASTER EASTER BEKLS STAKES GOOD GOODEaster Easter Bells which has been prominent la all his races but unsuccessful finally man ¬ aged to graduate from the maiden ranks when he won the sixth race He was lucky at the start and his early speed enabled him to secure a lead nt the outset and he won after a tussle with Jack Bauer The latter might have reversed the decision with the winner but for being forced back on the first turn He finished fast and resolutely Ascot one of the T C McDowell highlyregarded 1 ones landed third money There was somo j crowding on the first turn of tho race which I jockey Garner astride Jack Bauer com I plained of The closing race went to Tenr Bcao which 1 had successfully campaigned ta Havana last j winter and had also won at Lexington Ho wore British Maid down In the last sbc teenth of the mile and a sixteenth dash and j was going away in the last seventy yards Corson finished third just beating FauxCoL j There was still considerable Derby dis ¬ cussion today most of it centering around Morvlch Several astute turfmen Including INTEREST WELL MAINTAINED Continued from first page I E R Bradley and Emil Herz contended that Morvlch was straight aa a string at tho fln Ish and that ha vrould have been beaten had a good horse been a starter in the race They overlook that Morvlch on several occasions as a twoyearold raced elusslshly and un ¬ impressively but ha always rose to the emergency when asked a severe question questionOn On Saturday it was a plain case where Morvich did not have to race better than he did Had he been forced probably he would have responded In support of this Is jockey Johnson who made the statement that he was extended for a brief space only Morvich plainly showed unsteadiness in his Saturdays race This probably was due to it being his first start with colors up this year It is only logical to assume that he will steady down now and improve on the race Ills race in the Dwyer Stakes which is his first east ¬ ern engagement will be watched with inter ¬ est by horsemen in this section sectionMr Mr Bradleys losses by Morvichs victory and Busy Americans breakdown is said to have amounted to 5G3000 Emil Herz is another one who lost considerably by Mor ¬ vichs success T W Chicago OBrien is another who wagered heavily against Morvich during the winter months monthsMorvich Morvich and his entourage deported in regal style from here yesterday and were due to arrive in New York today Morvich will be returned to his former quarters at Ja ¬ maica maicaJockey Jockey Mack Garner returned this morning from Baltimore where he had been to ride Miss Joy in the Preakness Stakes He said that tho track was against the mare Kay Spence was advised that the fllly had been shipped this afternoon and would be at Churchill Downs tomorrow afternoon The only explanation he had to offer for tho fillys lamentable showing was that she had been subjected to a nervewracking ordeal follow ¬ ing her sensational mile and an eighth trial That same night she had to be removed from her stable adjacent to the illfated Camden Milam barn and she roamed the center Held for quite a period after getting loose from her handler The next morning she was loaded for her trip to Pimlico and she prob ¬ ably was still in a highly nervous state when she started in the race raceAlbert Albert Johnson who rode Morvich in the Derby will stay here to ride Exterminator in his stake engagements and will return to New York to ride Morvich in the Dwyer Stakes intended to be the medium of the Derby winners eastern debut this year Busy yearBusy American will be transferred to Idle Hour Farm as soon as he is in a flt condi ¬ tion to be shipped shippedDeadlock Deadlock which finished fourth In the Derby will be given a rest of a lengthy period The colt went down on his heels and this had a tendency to cause him to weaken in the final drive driveR R S Eddy Jr general manager of the Pair Grounds track was advised this morn ¬ ing of a favorable decision reversing the judgment of Judge Humphries in the Shaw DorrGardner and Bosbcrg cases The suc ¬ cessful outcome was hailed with joy by the horsemen here many congratulating Mr Eddy and Mr Gleason who was chief attor ¬ ney In the race track cases
