BULLSEYE TAKES GLENDALE 1 1 1 J. S. Cosderfs Game Jumper Wins Feature Event at Aqueduct. Thimble Defeats Pen Rose in Miss Woodford Handicap More - c Disagreeable Weather. c j NEW YORK, N. Y. July 5. Bullseye, the 1 game little jumper that races under the c silks of J. P. Cosdcn, was an easy winner J of the two and a half mile Glcndalc Stee- 1 plechase at Aqueduct today. It was the c first race over that distance and the son of Wrack and Single Shot, well ridden by 6 Charlie Mergler, proved himself a good sort 1 over such a route. He was carrying 115 j pounds and was second weight In the Hand:- . cap, the post of honor going to the Greentree Stables Hoi Craig, the one to finish third. He was beaten for second place by Joseph t E. Vi doners Joyful. 1 Two accidents came out of the running when J. E. Davis Phoenix went down wira "Specs" Crawford at the fifteenth fencr, ! while Joseph 13. Wideners Vigilante fell 1 heavily with Byers at the sixteenth. The day was another miserable one for the sport, with a drizzling rain falling al- most all afternoon and as a result the at- 1 tendance was smaller than at any time dur- j ing the meeting. The track was sloppy from the constant wetting and this brought about 1 many scratches. 1 Joyful was evidently in the Glendale to j make pace for Vigilante, for Smoot took her right out from the start, with Syrdarya and Roi Craig, following after her. Mergler was not far away with Bullseye and the others 1 were more or les3 strung out, with Phoenix soon a distant last, while Byers was racing Vigilante along under a steadying pull. ROI CRAIG GOES STALE. Roi Craig appeared to be a bit rank and Vincent Powers had him under steadying restraint for a turn of the field, but could not take him back and then in the front field at the fence before the water he made a slight bobble. Then at the water h jumped exceedingly high and from that stage of the running he was laboring in the soft Held. It was while going into the back field the second time that Mergler made his winning move with Bullseye. He sent the little fellow through on the inside and in a couple of jumps he was showing the way. Joyful was not through and she raced along gamely, but Roi Craig began to drop back badly and it was evident six fences from home that he was beaten. Phoenix went down as Crawford called on him and Syrdarya was quitting badly. Then Vigilante made his mistake two fences from the finish and there was nothing left to bother Bullseye and he was winner by a full ten lengths. Joyful was a3 easily second and then Roi Craig had to give up all he had to save third from Syrdarya. The best flat race was the Miss "Woodford Handicap, over the mile distance, for fillies and mares, in which R. J. Murphys Thimble in a game finish was winner over the Triple Springs Farms Pen Rose. The only other starter was Chateau Thierry, from the San-ford Stud Farm, and she was beaten oL PEN HOSE DELAYS START There was some delay at the post, for which Pen Rose was to blame, but the three ! left on the sade stride and Pen Rose, as was to be expected, at once went into a good lead. Thimble on the inside was second, and it was evident early that Chateau Thierry was not at home in the going and she dropped out of it early. On the turn out of the backstretch Thomas i swung his whip twice at Thimble to keep her at her task, and she was within two lengths of the flying Pen Rose. The Sweep mare was still racing strongly as she began her long run down the stretch, but Thimble was hanging on with rare courage and at the eighth post, when Thomas began the drive that was to land the Huon filly winner, she closed steadily. Pen Rose ran straight and true when Fator went to the whip on her, but the 12$ pounds was beginning to tell and at the end she was quitting badly, to be beaten a length and a half. Chateau Thierry was a full eight lengths back of Pen Rose. J. Lavins Valor found the sloppy going to his liking and he was ono of the easy winners of the day when he galloped off with the six and a half furlongs of the third race. Seven lengths back of him Stephen Pettits Finality easily saved second placo from John Shaughnessys Shaffer. Majprs Scott and Beard are in the market for thoroughbred stallions for the Array Rc- mount Bureau and have arranged to be at the receiving stable at Aqueduct Thursday between 1 and 2 oclock to pass on any offerings that are made. They have requested that any horsemen having suitable stallions for sale bo on hand with their horses. A. J. Goldsborough shipped the norses cf C. A- Stoneham, George IL Bull and C. H. Thierot to Saratoga Wednesday. T. J. Healey sent a string of the Richard T. Wilson and Walter J. Salmon horses to Yonkers today for the meeting of the Empire City assocaition. which opens Saturday. Mose Goldblatt will be in from Kentucky tomorrow with twelve of the H. P. Whitney horses that will be raced at the Yonkers meeting. A second dozen will also bo brought on from Latonia within a few days. Jockey D. Byers suffered a broken collarbone as a result of his fall with Vigilante in the running of the Glendale Steeplechase.
