METRICS AMAZING VICTORY Runs a Fast Three-Quarters and Stays the Route Gallantly. Pindar Peel Follows the Example of His Sister, Cho Cho, at Fort Erie and Yins His Race. BY J. L. DEMPSEY. LATONIA, Ky., July 5. Metric, carrying IL H. Hewitts colors and considered earlier in the racing season as being among the top-notch colts, but gradually losing esteem as a result of repeated poor performances, furnished an outstanding surprise at Latonia this afternoon when he won the three-quarters handicap and under a capital ride de-defeated In Memoriam, with Alice Blue Gown in third place. The 1 :12 that he ran the distance in vas the fastest of the afternoon. Metrics performance this afternoon was decidedly contrasting with some of his former races here and the ride that Connelly gave him was also considerably more energetic than he had given the colt in some previous races. He rushed into the lead at once, closely attended by In Memoriam, which also ran in improved form over his last race by virtuo of the better riding he received, and the pair finally hooked up to a spirited duel through the stretch, in which Metric proved the gamer and won by a scant neck. Alice Blue Gown followed in third place. There were five starters in the race, Skeezix, Alice Blue Gown and Kent L. receiving tho betting attention, with Metric the extreme outsider. Skeezix began slowly and was always outpaced and Kent L., requiring a strong rider, had scant chance under the diminutive apprentice Owens. PLEASANT WEATHER CONTINUES. Pleasant weather continued and a surprisingly large attendance, considering it was following a holiday, was on hand to view tho sport. Close finishes again helped to make the racing interesting and enjoyable. Pindar Peel continues hi3 winning ways and his success today, which came in the fourth race, marked his fourth victory at the meeting. He is Kreatly improved this year. He ruled an overwhelming favorite, to triumph over those he met this afternoon, but his win was not of tho easy variety, and it required some of Garners most earnest riding at one stage of the stretch racing to make him overhaul Tuscola. The latter, with a fine display of speed, raced into a good lead and made a fast pace for the first half mile, but the last eighth found her beginning to tire and Pindar Peel managed to wear her down. Royal Palm came fast near the end to land third place. Williams Bros. Sun God took the mile and an eighth dash from British Maid. It was Wilsons superior ride over C. Ralls on British Maid that proved tlie determining factor here. Damoris, the favorite, finished in third place. Sun God was at an extremely liberal price. AWAY A DECEIVER. One of the surprises of the afternoon came with the running of the second race, in which maiden two-year-old fillies contested, with T. C. McDowells Away a pronounced favorito. She flattered for a time, but when reaching tlie stretch she gave way and finally barely saved third place. The finish was a close one here, with Bendita, in T. P. Hayes colors, beating Bosh, a strongly backed one, but grouped with tho others in the field. The opener started the favorite backers off to success when Inquisition got home in advance and Lugs and Glyn followed. Inquisition took a long lead at tho outset, but tho final furlong found her failing fast and it was herculean work on the part of W. Pool to keep her at it long enough to withstand the rush of Lugs. Another nip-and-tuck finish came in tho sixth race when Repeater and Hope measured strides almost on even terms through the last eighth and Repeater, showing mors gameness than is his usual custom, outstayed Hope in tho last stride. La Foudro, after a rough race, headed the others tor third place. Diana proved an easy winner in the rJoa-ing race after leading for the entire way. Merchant, an outsider, landing in second place, with Inquiry third. Walnut Hall, ono of tho highly regarded ones, ran a poor race under his light rider and suffered additionally from interference. Exterminator, accompanied by Devastation, departed for New York tonight. Exterminator came out of his race in good condition. It is just probablo that tlie horse has had a trifle too much of it and would be benefited by a rest Continued on twelfth page. METRICS AMAZING VICTORY Continued from first page. Jockey Penman, feeling much improved, returned to the saddle this afternoon. Jame3 Rowe, Sr., sent word late yesterday that it j was not necessary for the rider to return to New York at once, hence the change in plans, and he will continue riding here for the remainder of the meeting. ! Jockey Garner received a 1,000 riding fee for his success on Firebrand.
