CLEVELAND TRACK HEAVY Cantilever Takes Maple Heights Feature Event Guv nor and Magician in Tight Finish. CLEVELAND, Ohio, July 13. After contesting the early leadership closely to the stretch with Croupier F. Peytons Cantilever captured the ?1,500 Forest City Handicap, the feature attraction at Maple Heights Park this afternoon. Croupier showed in front of Cantilever by a slight margin until the stretch was reached and in the final drive the son of Hanbridge proved the gamer. Tailor Maid held Murray safe for third place during the entire race. A heavy rain last night and during this morning rendered the track heavy for todays racing. This was responsible for much scratching and the handicap suffered, beiig reduced to four starters. , A thrilling finish came with the running of the third, in which Guvnor scored from Magician and Fifty-Fifty. The winner was tiring rapidly in the closing strides. Old Sinner and Fred Kinney came from behind in the stretch to win their respective races. T. J. Pendergast caused somewhat of a sensation when he annexed the initial dash, paying ?M9.40 for the usual investment. The stewards have given to starter Snyder authority to order scratched notoriously bad post actors even when entered on succeeding days. As a result the mare Puzzle has been ordered scratched from the sixth race tomorrow and she has been placed on the schooling list s Word reached here today that jockey Raymond Davis died at Ashland, Ky., on Sunday as a result of a fall while riding Mabel Trask at the recent meeting there. George Parmer, one of the assistant starters, was fined 5 by the stewards for striking jockey Eddie Martin with a whip while at the post yesterday. Jockey A. Kroger, who was denied a riding license by the Quebec Breeders anj Racing Association, has also been denied the privileges of riding here. v Starter Lester Dean has arrived from Ash-iand, Ky., and will serve as a patrol judge during the remainder cf this meeting. Mr. Dean reports that the Ashland meeting was a great success. Several carloads of horses have arrived from Ashland, Ky., among them a division of the stable of J. A. Parson, H. T. Palmar. A. H. Vivell, J. W. Pinkham and a number of others. It develops that the mare Aph threw ou a stifle during her race here on Saturday. The injury was promptly remedied and she was a carded starter today.
