C0SDEN PAYS TOP PRICE Q- 0F 9,000 FOR TRAP ROCK- FEDERAL GIRL COLT 6 in ?3 0. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 11. Undaunted by the failure of his 121,000 year- ling purchase of last year to prove his worth or even to get to the post thus far, J. S. Cosden, 6 Maryland sportsman, made an effort last night and succeeded in securing what was considered 6 04 the pick of the market when he acquired a chestnut colt by Trap Rock Federal Girl at the c Fasig-Tipton auction sales for 9,000. This was by far the best price of the sales to date and 6 it was realized after the most spirited bidding ever seen here. Six persons participated in it, but Cosden outlasted them all. s Dr. R, W. McCulley, acting for the Greentree Stable, opened the proceedings with a ,000 st offer for the Trap Rock colt and Fred Burlew quickly boosted it to ,000. Then Montfort T 77 Jones, Ral Parr, Sam Hildreth and Cosden took a hand in the proceedings and the bids flew thick and fast. Hildreth stuck longer than any of the others, with the exception of the buyer, n as he went to 8,000. When the colt was knocked down to the Marylander there was an 11 outburst of applause from the large crowd of spectators. k The son of Trap Rock is a splendid-looking individual and it was plain to be seen that he was to be the object of considerable attention, as there was a crowd around his stall in the J paddeck at all times. He was one of the nineteen offered by Capt. P. M. Walker from his Pagebrook Stud at Boyce, Va. Ballot Girl which has been named Cyclone f Last year Cosden acquired a colt by Sweep and which has proved of no value to his owner as a two-year-old, trainer William Garth being unable as yet to get him to the races. Another pleasing feature of last nights sale was the appearance of the first of the progeny fi of the young stallion Cudgel. The stamp of approval of this son of Broomstick as a sire was j placed on him at once, as the first filly offered brought 0,100. with Frederick Johnson the c purchaser. There was considerable action over this one also, as Fred Burlew, B. B. Jon2s, J. C. Milam and Johnson bid at a lively rate for several minutes before she finally went to the f latter. The filly in question was from the mare Torpenhow. The second Cudgel filly led into the ring, from the mare High Pass, was acquired by p Algernon Daingerfield, acting, it is said, for Admiral Cary T. Grayson, for ,100. Both of C these youngsters are good lookers and are of splendid conformation. s Last nights sales were by far the best of the season to date, even though the total was J not as large as on the opening night. Thirty-five yearlings were disposed of for a total of SI 00,050, an average of ,858. The consignments offered were those of P. M. Walker. Samuel Ross, Cary T. Grayson and George H. Slater. The Walker band of nineteen brought 1,800. an average of ,726, while f Ross sold fourteen for 5,250, an average of ,323. Admiral Grayson and Slater had only one ! s apiece. 1 Harry F. Sinclair was at the ringside last night and his presence seemed to be the signal for the Rancocas Stable to make more additions to its already large establishment. Trainer Hildreth bought the first four yearlings offered at a total of 3,100 and also made further purchases from time to time. He was in the thick of the bidding on all of the high-priced j horses and outlasted quite a few rivals until he hooked up with Cosden on the 9,000 colt.
