I ; i 1 ; , 1 1 CLOSE FINISHES AT ERIE Attendance Improved and Capital Brand of Racing Furnished the Spectators. ERIE. Pa., August 22. After contesting the leadership closely during the early running with Major Homo, R. D. Cassells Advance finished resolutely anu outstayed Hoover in the fourth race, which attracted the best field at Exposition Park this afternoon. The attendance was much improved over yesterday and the racing was interesting, featured by clcse finishes. July Fly scored a narrow victory over Mannchen in the dash. Red Chief only lasted long enough to win the third race by a similar margin. Another stirring finish marked the running of the second race, in which Butler outgamed Vansylvia. Treadwell, St. Kevin and Dr. Hall scored by more comfortable margins after leading practically throughout in their, respective .races. Jockey R. Hplloway suffered a, bruised foot when he was crowded against the fence, while astride Tom Norris, during the running of the second race. J. A. , Parson, represented in the fourth race by Shortstop, claimed Hoover from O. L. Foster for ,100. - Word reached here today from Toledo that jockey G. Williams has recovered from an attack of fever, with which he was taken down during the recent meeting there. J. Hammond today purchased the plater Badly Marked at private sale. Old Pop raced for H. Dougherty today for the first time. He was purchased from J. and. Hoskins at private terms. J. Hiitton announced today that White Socks pulled up in such bad condition yesterday that he will be shipped back to Avon, N. Y., to be turned out for the remainder of the year.
