SATURDAYS SPECIAL RACE Owners of the Entered Colts Are Praised for True Sportsmanship in the Matter. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 22. The fact that the owners of the colts taking part in the Saratoga Special three-year-old championship race, to be run over a mile and a quarter route on Saturday riext, are practically starting their fine colts for the benefit of the sport and the delectation of the public has not been lost sight of. All day yesterday there was praise for the gentlemen whose sportsmanship has taken a turn which will give the sport lovers of the country a treat that may long be remembered. It recalls the days when there wasnt as much racing in this country as now, when no matter how good a horse was there was always opposition for him in the various weight for age races which were such a; feature of the sport at that time. It was not considered sportsmanlike to dodge and, win or lose, the owners of the period wanted their colors represented. With the true sporting spirit manifesting itself once more there is hope that it will spread and bring about the conditions which make racing so attractive. There was considerable discussion as to how fast the race would be run. Some predictions were made that the record for three-year-olds over the course would be approached or beaten. This is the 2:01 of the mighty Man o War, made with 129 pounds in the saddle. Sir Barton, a four-year-old, with the same impost up ran in the same time. It is a task that will call for speed and gameness beyond the ordinary. If the weather holds good between now and Saturday, superintendent Clare will have the track perfect. In fact it was fast yesterday.
