SARATOGAS GLORIOUS MEETING HORSEMEN CARRY AWAY OVER 00,000 IN PRIZE MONEY THIRTY-FIVE STAKES, INCLUDING THE HOPEFUL OF NET VALUE OF 8,950, ATTRACT BEST HORSES IN THE COUNTRY RANCOCAS STABLE THE LARGEST WINNER The annual August race meeting at Saratoga has come and gone. Considering the unusual amount of inclement weather and subsequent muddy track conditions, it measured up to the high standard of former years. In one particular it surpassed all previous meetings at Americas most noted racing grounds, that in the matter of prize money distribution. Durnig the twenty-seven days of racing there was distributed in stakes and purses the munificent sum of 402,494, a decided increase over the 5356,990 of last year, the highest previous record for the course. The daily average distribution amounted to 14,907 as compared to the 4,332 of 1921. With an imposing array of thirty-five stake races ranging in value to the winner from 538,950 of the Hopeful to the 52,100 of the Expectation Handicap, it was only reasonable to suppose that the best horses in the country would be found there in competition for those j rich prizes. Such was the case, practically all the stars of their respective divisions meet-i ing at one time or another, and many were the brilliant displays of speed and stamina that j were witnessed by truly cosmopolitan gatherings that included people of all walks of life and from all sections of the country. Incidentally, the yearling sales held in the evening attained a greater prominence and j attracted more interest than formerly, with the result that satisfactory prices were realized, ! particularly for the more promising of the offerings. j Saratogas place in American racing is firmly established. It not only provides excellent entertainment in the great tests of the thoroughbred qualities but it is also the great j thoroughbred market of the country. May it always prosper! Had S. C. Hildreth wen the Hopeful and Saratoga Cup on the final day of the meeting the total winnings of the Rancocas Stable at Saratoga would have amounted to over 5100,000. However, the old "wizard trainer" failed by inches in those two valuable fixtures and had to be content with the modest sum of 76,596 to show his employer, Harry Sinclair, for the months campaign at the Spa. The Rancocas Stable was a busy one and in most cases swept everything before it, accounting for twenty races and the sum mentioned above. A formidable rival of the Rancocas establishment was J. S. Cosden of Virginia, whose stable is so ably presided over by the astute and skillful "Billy" Garth. The largest monetary prize of the meeting fell to this turfman when Dunlin captured the Hopeful Stakes. Altogether, the Cosden horses won eleven races and 509,064. The colors of H. P. Whitney -were not as prominent as it -was expected they -would be, the stable winning but five races and 0,605. The Greentree Stable met with a goodly measure of success, eight races and 15,406, as did that of "Bud" Fisher, his representatives accounting for six races and 4,571. Zev, Little Chief, Edict, Goshawk and Martingale were other horses that were win-; ners of substantial sums. However, the real equine honors of the meeting go to the evergreen and marvelous gelding, Exterminator, which won the famous Saratoga Cup for the fourth time in succession, a feat never be- fore even approached, much less equalled in the history of the American turf. He accepted jj fifty-seven mounts and rode twenty-two winners for the excellent and high percentage s of .39. L. McAtee is second on the list, but g owes his proud place more through plentiful opportunities than to any great riding J S skill. He rode oftener than any other jockey, ! appearing in the saddle in seventy-four races p in which he was only successful in eleven, f The "old master," Earl Sande, rode nine win- ners out of forty-three mounts, while M.
