JAMES BUTLER BUYS VULCA1N I Destined to Succeed Pebbles as Leading Sire at East View Stud. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. T., September 1. E. J. Tranter, acting for James Butler, purchased the chestnut stallion Vulcain, twelve years old, by Rock Sand Lady of the Vale, by Rayon dOr, from the Oxnard estate today. The price was not made public, but it is known to have been more than 5,000, as that amount was named as a reserve bid when the horse was put up for auction. Vulcain was the premier stallion of the Blue Ridge Stud and had marked success as a potent sire when mated with the Oxnard mares. Mr. Butlers East View farm is well stocked with well-bred matrons, and the new stallion should play an important part in bringing that breeding establishment to the forefront in New York thoroughbred production. Among the mares now at East View with which Vulcain will probably be mated next year are Capra, by Ballot; Wistful, by Star Shoot; Comely, by Disguise; Miss Puzzle, by Disguise; Napping, by Peter Pan; Supremacy, by Ultimus; Little Queen, by Voter; Ambrosial, by Voter; Keltic, by Celt; Jest, by Ben Brush; Jingling, by Ben Brush; Militant, by Ballot; Tamira, by Peter Pan; Haggle, by Star Shoot; Skip, by Delhi, and Fire Fly, by King James. Most of these matrons are from the band which Mr. Butler purchased as yearlings in 1913 from the Castleton Stud of James R. Keene in Kentucky. Wistful he purchased for ,000 at New Orleans, later winning over ,000 with her as a two and three-year-old.
