Hurry On in going to the top of the list of English winning stallions in his first season is in itself remarkable, but in his having sired a Derby winner from his first mare mated with him it is, I believe, absolutely unique, says "Special Commissioner" in London Sportsman. Then, too, it is not on Captain Cuttle only that the big son of Marcovil depends, for at Goodwood, when Lord Woolavingtons champion could not run, Diligence, another son of Hurry On, was amply good enough to win. Prestong-range is another good three-year-old, and Town Guard, by Hurry On, is clearly the best two-year-old we have yet seen out, while Ishtar is among the best. In fact, every animal by Hurry On that has hitherto been in training can gallop to some purpose, though some of them need careful handling. Someone asks me : Has there ever been such an immediate success? As regards the Derby there have been two or three, though whether out of the first mares bred to their respective sires we have no records to show. Certain it is that Doncaster sired Bend Or in his first season, and Ben Or in his first season sired Ormonde, which, in his first season, became the sire of a de jure Derby winner in Orme. The most curious case, however, was that of Florizel II., whose first season eventuated in a blaze of triumph with the Derby winner Volodyovski, the St. Legis winner" Doricles, the Gold Vase winner Mackintosh, and the Middle Park Plate winner Floriform. all to his credit. . This surely was brilliant enough, but Florizel II., having gone up like a rocket, did assuredly come down like a stick, for never again did any of his progeny compare with the offspring of his first season. In fact, it may be said he never sired another really good one certainly not another classic winner. The prospects of Hurry On are far better than this, for his two-year-olds promise to go to the top next year as his three-year-olds are doing now. I little dreamed when I used to see him as a late foal, but a big one at that, with his dam, Toute Suite, in the paddock facing Park Cottage, Cobham, what the future had in store for him, for his dam stood barely fifteen hands, and at that time Marcovil was by no means a fashionable sire. Hurry On was foaled in May, and from what source he derived his great size, unless, perhaps, from Lady Villikins, is something of a mystery. Hurry On is a bigger horse than Captain Guttle will ever be, and that is saying a good deal.
