FAMOUS AMERICAN fiERBY Shades of Washington Park and the great American Derby I The near approach of the i contemplated revival of racing at Hawthorne has stirred the hearts of the citizens of Chicago I and the state of Illinois who admire the thoroughbred and enjoy the sport of racing and awakened in them the long-cherished hope that the day is not far distant when instead of traveling to Kentucky, New York, Maryland or Canada they may remain at home and enjoy the pleasures long denied them racing in Chicago, with the American Derby restored to its former glory. It has been eighteen years since the last American Derby was run, in 1904; when Highball won it.
