CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF The distance of the English Grand National Steeplechase was increased by a quarter of a mile in 1872, and Huntsman had the record time of 9:30. Ascetics Silvers 9:34 in 1906 i3 the fastest time over the present course. The colors of the late Pierre Lorillard, the eminent turfman, who was the first American turfman to win the Epsom Derby, were cherry and black, with gold tasseled cap, and wonderfully successful were they both here and abroad. Conroy won the Brooklyn Handicap of 1901 for James R. Keene. He was the first three-year-old winner of that big race. He carried 102 pounds, four and a half pounds being overweight Conroys only previous race that year was for the Jockey Club TVeight-for-Age race, one and one-eighth miles, at Morris Park May 23, which he won from Blues.
